Cuts analysis
No surprise that Tuukka Rask, Jeff Penner, Martin St. Pierre, and Matt Lashoff are the four most recent cuts.
* Rask had the best camp of the three goalies, but had several factors against him: his inexperience and his $3.2 million cap hit. Claude Julien was quick to point out that Rask had a terrific camp and can be counted on if either Tim Thomas or Manny Fernandez suffers an injury.
* Jeff Penner was one of the biggest surprises in camp. The first-year pro played with poise and did all the little things -- skate well, move the puck efficiently, position himself defensively. He needs to get stronger in the danger areas, but the Bruins like what they saw from Penner.
* St. Pierre, if he clears waivers, will center one of the top two lines in Providence.
* Lashoff had a disappointing camp. Not much development in his game from last year. Has all the skills but looked jumpy and didn't play with confidence. Needs to work on turning and retrieving pucks, then making quick, correct decisions when getting it up the ice. The Bruins like his game from the offensive blue line in.

These cuts were expected. Rask will be back quickly once a market develops. I wish Jacobs would "bite the bullet" and send Schaefer to Providence. It may cost some money but Wheeler right now deserves to be in the line up.
IMHO there is no need to keep PS anywhere in the organization. If we want someone to play 10 good games a year we can probably het Bochenski back.
I think he once we are a week into the season, but I would rather them place him on waivers, and maybe someone will pick him up granted it is a long shot, and if that doesn't work call him back thru re entry maybe someone takes him at half the price, this could happen. Worse case send him back and he is an overpaid AHL player but his $$ is off the cap
Peter Schaefer is such a waste of talent. He has great ability with the puck but it just looks like he doesn't care out there. As far as Rask going down it makes sense. The guy will be the starter for the Bruins for the 09-10 campaign as both Timmy and Manny's contracts are up at the end of the season (Early prediction, Timmy stays as the back up and Rask starts). I'm glad they are letting him develop for another year in Providence. I don't want another Hannu Toivenen situation occuring here, where Rask sits on the bench as a backup and gets no playing time to improve. Waive Reich please. We already have Thornton to be the tough guy and you know Lucic loves to throw his weight around. We can't afford to have another non offensive tough guy on the squad. I'd take Sobotka, Pettri or Wheeler over him any day.
Good post RJ ... agree with every point.
RJ A follow up to my earlier commentary, I understand the potential of Schaefer. His time has come and gone. He is not in his twenties. No one will pick the waiver of a 2.1 million player who plays marginally. The obvious solution is for the owner Jacobs not Chiarelli to make a decision to send Schaeffer to the minors and freeing cap money.
Rask does not need more time in the minors. He is ready to assume a larger role. Thomas cannot play 50 games. Just because he his Finnish does make him another Toivenen. He is in a league as Carey Price. As for Fernandez, he is a bust. I certainly hope I am wrong, if I am it is because Claude Julian is able to find a solid defense in his young defensemen.
I agree with waving Reich.
Carson.
Last year Thomas played 57 games despite the injuries and has a healthy record. No one with a higher save percentage played more than Thomas. Rask probably is ready. But like a lot of good goalies Thomas plays best when he's going 85% or more. If Med-evac Manny can stay healthy for six games he'll be gone faster than you can say third round pick and Tukka will probably get the call. Even if he doesn't Thomas's contract is up this year and iirc Manny's is too.
RJ good points on Thomas, but, he has not been the type of goalie to steal games without a solid defense or lucky offense. This team is too young on defense. The logic here is to make a trade for a legitimate defender around 27 years of age... there are a few out there. Now the trade bait would be Fernandez (aka a ninth round pick would be fine) and a centerman (not Bergeron) with Fernandez and a draft pick. Nonetheless they have two loyal fans in this space.
