Cuts analysis

Peter Schaefer never found consistency as a Bruin. (David Kamerman/Globe Staff)

DENVER -- One last post on a long and tiring day.

* While Ottawa GM Bryan Murray viewed the July 2007 Peter Schaefer-Shean Donovan trade as cap relief, the Bruins believed they were getting a possible first-liner. The thought was that Schaefer had fallen into Murray's doghouse when the GM was still behind the bench, and that with some ice time, he could be an impact player. Peter Chiarelli rolled the dice on this one and the move didn't work out. But Chiarelli made a prudent hockey decision by placing Schaefer on waivers instead of gambling once again that he could reclaim his game.

* Nate Thompson did everything he was asked to do as a fourth-line center -- work hard, skate, forecheck, bring energy, and play with an edge. But Thompson, more than anyone, was affected by the Stephane Yelle signing. Thompson might be a better skater, but Yelle has experience, rings, and is a touch more physical. If Thompson isn't claimed, he'll be a valuable player to promote when injuries strike.

* Jeremy Reich falls into Thompson's category, doing all the things required of a fourth-line left wing. But the numbers were against Reich, especially with Milan Lucic starting the year on the fourth line as he tries to work his way up the depth chart. The coaching staff likes Reich and he could also be brought back if he isn't claimed.

* Matt Hunwick didn't have a great camp, but he's close to pushing one of the seven veterans out of the way. The Bruins like his skating and his maturity, and will be bringing him up when injuries take place.

* If you look at the archives for this space, you might notice that this puck hack predicted every cut correctly throughout training camp. All congratulatory notes can be submitted to my attention at the Globe on the backs of $100 bills.

Any insight on the wayward Nordiques?

  1. Excellent work today Fluto.

You deserve every last "congratulatory note".

  1. Seriously Fluto,

Without you, we wouldn't have any idea what was going on with the Bruins. No joke man.

I'm sure everyone that reads your blog has the same sentiment. Please, for all our sake, keep up the great work!

  1. Yes, nice work Fluto ...
Too bad I didn't read anything about you predicting a Cup this year :=)

  1. So basically you want to be congratulated for doing your job???

I do my job every single day, and have been for the 17 years of my adult life. I never once begged for kudos, they always came naturally..

  1. What's your job, Jeffro? If you work in Vegas or are a politician, then you deserve congratulations for getting things right all the time.

    - Sounds very similar to a pick up this off season, no? With the exception being that Ryder has shown oh-fensive skill in the past. Hope it has a completely different ending though.

Great work Fluto in the post and pre-season, I am looking forward to when it counts with bells on! I would send you that C-note but TD Banknorth got it for the home opener. I'll buy you a $7, 8oz Coors lite at that game though ;-P

  1. Fluto, some do their job each day, but not very well. I enjoy your analysis and commentary. Let us hope Fernandez plays well. One it will be great to have Thomas to have help. Two he will be trade bait during the season.

  1. Way to be "that guy" Jeffro, I'm sure you're a hit at parties.

  1. You know you are doing well when you have "haters", keep up the good work and thanks for actually doing your homework and caring. I live in Philadelphia after four long years and DC but came from Cambridge. You have to live up to one of the best sports sections in the States and I think you do it with class.

    GO BRUINS!

  1. Does anyone else see the irony in the fact that Glen Murray used to wear #27, and as soon as he was cut Peter Schaefer laid claim to the #27 jersey...

Let that be a lesson to you kids...

  1. "... this puck hack..."

Jeez Fluto, now you're calling Peter Chiarelli a puck hack too?! When will it end!? Have you no respect?! It's wildly obvious, and clear to me you specifically mean PC and not yourself!

Hahah just playing, of course :) I just wanted to see what it felt like to be a 'sky is falling' Bruins fan.

Anyways Fluto, keep up the great work, as this page is kept on constant refresh while I'm at the computer all day. Can't wait for Thursday! Woo!
