Long live the Omni

Posted by Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff October 15, 2008 09:40 AM

MONTREAL -- A fondness for this city was one of the things that Jack Falla and I shared. Jack, who passed away last month, used to say that the best thing about my restaurant of choice here (L'Express) was that I'd never run into another sportswriter. That's held true so far.

So I guess it's fitting that I'm here as Doc Kelly, Jack's best friend, passes along some news. Doc says that the Bacon Street Omni, Jack's backyard rink, will go up again this winter, perhaps for the last time. Some readers had been wondering if the rink would see another winter.

Doc will help Jack's family put up the boards next month. When the time is right, there will be ice at the Omni this winter. I'm sad that Jack won't be there for a spin on his rink. But it pleases me that his family and friends will enjoy a skate at the Omni just like always.

Back to your regular Bruins programming in a bit.
