The Bruins ranked a bottom-of-the-barrel 30th in penalty killing after the weekend, then went 3 for 3 on the kill against the Oilers. They were clearly more aggressive in their own end, with team captain Zdeno Chara noticeably tough around the net and punishing along the boards.

''Obviously better -- we were proactive,'' said coach Claude Julien. ''It's been a disappointment for us so far this year. We played with more desperation and commitment.

Chara led the way on the PK, logging a team-high 3:10 of ice time when the club was shorthanded. Next on the time clock: David Krejci, punching in with 1:52.

Aaron Ward was a key PK participant, too, logging 1:36 and making one or two of his club-high four blocked shots.
