Murray strikes again

Posted by Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff October 2, 2008 06:09 PM

This fraud of a wanna-be GM made a big-league goof today by not including Glen Murray's buyout money in Boston's cap number.

By adding Murray's buyout dough to the cap numbers of the 23 players detailed earlier, the Bruins' total hit comes to $56,457,499. That's squeaking just under the $56.7 million cap ceiling, leaving virtually no flexibility.

  1. If i were G.M. I would pick my team, play a decent amount of games,SHOW MY PLAYERS I HAVE CONFIDENCE IN THEM,and if they didnt produce down the road, especially the high ticket ones, send them packing. What is so hard about that. This shouldnt be rocket science.Fluto,I think he packed up the team with some possibilities to get really close to the cap and in the end if they dont contribute move some big ticket guys.First,he is going to have to show some confidence in what he has got.I think they have got much talent,be patient for things to gel.A good pilot dosnt overreact under bad gust of wind.

  1. "fraud of a wanna-be GM" ?

Dude, you have to explain that. What?

  1. Jeeeze Fluto is Chia banging your wife or something? You don't think its possible he was only talking about the cap money for the guys who will be on the ice for the team this year?

  1. Are you calling Pete a wanna-be GM?

I'm interested to know why you think that way?

  1. Is this for real? Did Fluto actually call PC a "fraud of a wanna-be GM"? Whatever that means. If so, Fluto should be fired and left to scribe loser blog messages just like this one.

  1. Yikes guys. I was referring to myself. Earlier yesterday, I had posted my 23-man roster along with the final cap number, leaving out Murray's buyout number. After realizing my mistake, I added Murray's $1,383,333 number back in. OK?

  1. Woooosh
The sound of the 1st sentence flying over at least 4 peoples heads :-D

I will admit I had to read it twice, but I got it after that.

  1. Pretty obvious Fluto was referring to himself. What did somebody pee in everybodies Cheerios ?

  1. Fluto, I understood that you were referring to yourself but I can see how it may be misinterpreted by someone. You may want to revise the wording of the post...just my 2 cents.

  1. Haha ... wow Fluto ... I thought it was obvious what you were getting at ... don't know what these other guys are going on about. Also, so what if a reporter talks trash about a GM... "Fluto should be fired" ... really?? Seems to me I'd rather have a reporter speak the truth than tow the company line.

Keep up the good work Fluto!

  1. Hahahah wow... these are the funniest comments I've yet to read on the Blog! Did people actually think Fluto was calling PC a fraud of a GM? I thought it was pretty clear, with what he meant.

"This fraud of a GM..." right there indicates to me he's talking about himself, at least to me. I think he's even referred to himself as a 'wanna-be' GM at times. Maybe if people actually bothered to read. What a concept.

    The sky is falling!

  1. You guys are ridiculous...if you've read any of his prior posts (or have a brain), he's made a guess on the roster for the Bruins that would be under the cap...he is saying that HE FLUTO, NOT PC, forgot to take into account Murry's buyout money thus, FLUTO is a wanna-be GM NOT PC...Fluto, it's all good buddy, some of your readers...well...they shouldn't be reading :)

  1. I claimed that the Bruins fans we the most passionate of all of the major sports teams in New England, but I did not say they were the most intellectual (I include myself of course). Fluto's reference, I believe, was about himself and his projection of the cap from yesterday's blog. Enough already.

  1. Does anyone know if Murray is playing hockey anywhere, Europe?

  1. The really funny thing is that Chiarelli IS a fraud of a GM. And its only a matter of time before Jeremy Jacobs does something. After firing OC and whislt searching for a new GM, I remember Jacobs musing something about how he didn't see any problem with hiring a GM on a sorta interim basis, 2 or 3 years. That a GM needn't be hired for life. At the time, I thought, 'nice one, Jacobs'. bless your cold cold heart*. I bring this up now, not because I agree with Jacobs' fruitfly loyalty, but as a reminder that there is no way Jacobs isn't watching all this. I wonder how this was decided. Was there a budget proposal? Did Chiarelli approach Jacobs and say; 'Sir, trust us, we must spend to the Cap"? Did JJ give the order to 'spend to the Cap'? Is he cool at the Cap? Is he grinding his teeth? Jacobs was the Lead Hawk to get this playing field levelled, to where an Owner had quantifiable evidence, hence control, of his GM's movements. To where, a GM, alone, can no longer drive an Owner's investment into the ground. He worked hard and broke a lot of hockey hearts to get it. So, with the playing field, effectively levelled, it's a GM's game now. GM against GM. It's the GM's job to lose. Chiarelli better get a move on. The game isn't; 'Who Can Win The Cup". The game Jacobs and his buddies play is; 'Who Can Win The Cup For The Least Amount Of Money"

  1. Turk, I went to Altavista.com and used tried using the Babel Fish Translation to try to make sense of your last comment but I couldn't find the "Incoherent Rambling to English" option.

  1. Thanks for the unintentional humor, Fluto. ;-) You do have to realize, though, that satire and sarcasm often fly over people's heads. Dave Barry, of all people, has said that some readers actually take him seriously. Erma Bombeck had the same problem. That said, don't try to pander to the lowest common demoninator. Most of us will get it. ;-)

And I don't get people complaining about Chiarelli. Looks like the Bruins have improved immensely over the past couple of seasons. Of course it takes time, but he's building a solid foundation and turning the ship around. I'm very much looking forward to the season.

  1. Hey AL. Maybe, next time you should 'use try using' Proofreader.com , especially if you 'want are wanting' to nail someone on syntax and especially if you 'try are trying' to be funny.

No one likes a Blog Cop, AL. i write what I want to write. Besides, i figure, you've got the big stuff covered; 'Who's on the 'PeeKay'?, What's Fluto eating today? What's Shawn Thornton's jock smell like?

Which part of 'Peter Chiarelli is a fraud of a GM' did you have trouble with?

Posted by Turk October 3, 08 04:54 PM
  1. Turk, please fire up your wayback machine and go visit the Time before PC. You'll find a wasteland left by the ravages of the Sinden and Sinden 1.25 era. You'll notice that there were no noticeable stars signing with the B's who weren't over the hill or on and off the wagon. You'll notice a real lack of All Stars, and one "The Next Big Name in Goal" a year....

Flash forward. Last year despite losing their best forward for almost the whole season, they sent a goalie, a defenseman, a forward and a rookie to the All Stars. They also went to the playoffs with a record 18 points better than the previous year and did so in a division with three teams in the playoffs.

Marian Hossa, the number 1 free agent was not signed because the Bruins would have had to give up too much to get him. He was not signed _twice_ for this reason.

When faced with the problem of the two Glens, both fan faves he made the tough call both times. Offense is what the team needs, they weren't providing it.

Blake Wheeler, a number 5 pick chose Boston over 29 other teams to sign with.

Savard and Chara came in and Boston has its first Norris nomminie since Bourque. Boston also had the guy who was down ti the injury close with Joe Thornton for most assists last season.

In three years if the B's still haven't made it past the first round you _might_ have a point.
Until then take the hot air outside its killing the ice quality.

  1. Chiarelli couldn't land Marion Hossa, but not for a lack of trying (your Phil Kessel, I might add was what he was using as bait); Chiarelli has nothing to show for a massive investment in Glen Murray except a 50% discount on his salary; Chiarelli did not even try to resign Glen Metropolit, the utility/plug-any-hole guy that should be inheriting PJ Axelsson's place this year (Peej, being the next guy Chiarelli's going to have nothing to show for, this time next year); Blake Wheeler landed in Chiarelli's lap, deceived by Lucic's success and Cam's presence into thinking that Chiarelli's Bruins were a team where a kid had a chance (Chiarelli's part at the time was to downplay expectations (his specialty) as he assured everyone at the time that Wheeler, clearly, wasn't ready for the big game); Savard and Chara were both Gorton's signings And, from up here in the 'Wayback Machine', i see Sinden's Bruins, winning a Cup, ALWAYS reaching the Playoffs; Winning Presidents Trophies (before and after they were called Presidents Trophies); getting to the Finals twice; I see goalies winning Vezinas and I see an endless parade of Players young and old who were magically transformed just by pulling on the jersey. I see a man and an organization that used to consider any season that ended shy of the 2nd Round to be an abject failure. I see a team that didn't have to say it wanted to be tough to play against , it just was. Here in my Wayback Machine, I can't even see, let alone imagine a future like the present.

  1. Fifteen years ago Sinden was reasonably adept at getting teams into the playoffs. But, the Bruins haven't won a round since 1990something. I think PC is a bit more recent than that.

Wheeler had told everyone _well before_ he signed that he was going to play college this year. He was commited to finishing up. Part of the issues we see are because he changed his mind. Had he stayed in school until next year when a number of contracts are up he'd have been in with no issues.

Metropolit is a great guy, and a decent player. He is now being paid twice as much as he was here, he's as old as PJ and not as quick, and PJ is better offensively. The person I suspect (or maybe hope) is being groomed as PJs understudy is Sobotka. And Sobotka is younger, about as gifted offensively, cheaper, and faster. It would have been irresponsible to resign Metro when you've got; Bergeron, Savard, Krejci, Sobotka and others in the center slot. Given that the CBA could be expired by the NHLPA this year, and the number of developing centers/forwards there was no need to resign him. Metro came to camp last year on a tryout and was signed to a one year deal. He got a big raise and a two year deal when he left here, he's not crying

And after Moog/Lemelin there hasn't been a stable pair in goal. We've had Graham, Dafoe, Lacher, Raycroft, Toivennen, and half a dozen others in the past 10 years. The guys we got in trade were washed up and the young guys were mostly pushed

  1. Again, with you 'bleeder', I feel the need to push the 'Refresh' button on an argument. Lets go back. I merely, stated that i don't like the job Chiarelli is doing. You decide to frame a debate with a vague, ridiculous dismissal of all Harry Sinden was able to accomplish (not to mention your blasphemous trashing of the many, many, many great Bruins who wore the uniform in that time). and you set that against the half a dozen , or so, things Peter Chiarelli hasn't or couldn''t accomplish. It's insulting to Harry to even entertain such a comparison, but I foolishly, countered your Chiarelli 'non-accomplishments' , while providing a list of just some of Sinden's career highlights, half of which, would put anyone into the Hall Of Fame. You, 'bleeder' of course, ignore the Sinden stuff, ignore the fact that it was Mike O'Connell in charge of much of the 'wasteland' period you're talking about, and turn this into a discussion about the merits of the Glen Metropolit non-signing.

I guess, I don't get you, 'bleeder'. What kind of 'b&g' are you 'bleeding'? You must know that the 'Golden Age" that EVERYONE here weeps and pines to return to, that Management, player and fan alike try to mimic and recall was presided over by - that's right - Harry Sinden? You know that 'The Blueprint' that Chiarelli and everyone else is trying to locate and recreate, the "Be ToughTo Play Against' bit, was conceived, nutured, perfected by Harry Sinden? In your esteem, 'bleeder', are you, seriously, placing Peter Chiarelli above Harry Sinden? I know Chiarelli wouldn't.

'bleeder', do you really think that history begins now? If you don't know where this team came from , then I suppose you can be happy about the job Chiarelli is doing. if you don't know, or can't appreciate what "Cam Neely for Barry Pederson" means, then i suppose, 'Dennis Wideman for Brad Boyes' must seem pretty huge to you.

When Chiarelli stops making excuses and starts making deals that are going to make this team better - even unpopular deals - then, maybe - maybe - you can begin to mention him in the same e-breath as Harry Sinden.

Now, you can get back to 'Metro's' plus/minus.

  1. Fluto, thanks for clarifying. I honestly didn't understand the sentence and was asking for an explanation. Figured I was reading it wrong, but didn't know what you meant.

Either that, or you'd snapped, and we'd be reading about you on the front page in the morning. In the Globe it would be "Hockey Writer Suffers Breakdown." In the Herald: "Shinny Scribe Snaps."

Bear in mind I played before helmets and it sometimes shows.
