All-Star ballot released

Posted by Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff November 4, 2008 05:15 PM

Not really a surprise that Tim Thomas isn't among the 10 Eastern Conference goalies on the All-Star ballot that was released today.

Tim Thomas -- snubbed again. (Justine Hunt/Globe Staff)

Thomas has been perpetually snubbed, despite being an All-Star last season and posting consecutive shutouts last week. Instead, we've got Martin Brodeur (out for four months), Rick DiPietro (sidelined because of knee surgery), and Martin Biron (3-4-1, 3.79 GAA, .874 save percentage) on the ballot when Thomas, Mike Smith (3-2-2, 2.07 GAA, .941 save percentage), and Alex Auld (3-2-1, 2.15 GAA, .931 save percentage) are more deserving.

Here's the list from the East, with three snubs at each position in italics:

Goalies

Martin Biron
Martin Brodeur
Rick DiPietro
Marc-Andre Fleury
Kari Lehtonen

  1. Maybe if Tim Thomas was not a flip flop artist, or had won a playoff round in his career, or did not shine in October and November instead of folding like a cheap tent in March and April then he would be on the All Star ballot.

  1. Gotta think Thomas will be named in Brodeur's spot. Still wish he would be named on the first go-round.

Bergeron, Savard, Chara and Thomas will be on the team.

  1. This is a huge mistake! I just can't believe it. The All-Star game is for the best of all in the present season. Who cares about reputation and stuff. Right now, Tim Thomas is in the elite group. This is stuff like this that makes the NHL a joke.

  1. yeah, once again Timmy's got the snub. it was fixed last year. I hope it'll be fixed this year, too.

I Love Timmy, he may be a little unorthodox, but he's carried that team last season and this season so far, too. Give the guy credit, he earned it.

  1. Blasphemy! Even Lehtonen doesn't belong on there!

  1. Sorry if you can't handle the FACTS warren, if you have a problem you more then welcome to come debte me on the Bruins board. The bottom line is Timmy is a glorified beer league goaltender who sometimes goes on hot streaks early in the season but always crumbles under the pressure.

  1. Right now, as we speak, Tim Thomas is the best goalie in the NHL. Being the best at any point in the season is worth an All Star nod.

  1. Crumbles to the point of making the All Star team last year and carrying a B's team that couldn't light the lamp 7 games into the first round against one of the best six teams in the league. You have no debate, only opinion that is shot down by facts.

  1. agree this is totally stupid. TT is # 1 in save percentage and # 2 in GAA in entire league!! total joke.

  1. the fact is as of right now ryan miller is the best goalie, then thomas!

  1. Love Bergeron but Kessel should be in his place. NHL loved blowing deals with this kind of stuff.

  1. Take Kari off that list and put TimTom on.

  1. it's all a joke just like stillallbost08....The all star game lost it's true meaning years ago...Over glorified hot dog stand.....Thomas will be in there without a doubt...there will be lots of players pulling out at the last minute..

  1. There are always some disparities... Timmy should be on there, Kessel should be on there, but then again, Chara hasn't had an all star season so far, but he is there. A dozen games into the season, you sort of have to go on reputation.

  1. How can you not include an All-Star goalie in the next season's ballot? This league has no idea how to keep its fleeing fans happy.

  1. Isn't all-star voting just for the starting 6 anyways? I thought the league or GMs/Coaches picked the remainder of the rosters.

  1. I admit I do cringe at every shot that comes at the Bruins net because of his unorthodox style but I think that his stats alone make him near the top of that list. Only Ryan Miller has been better and he plays the traditional style that most goalies play now. Thomas has fought to get to where he is and deserves the respect that should come with that. He should be on that list.

  1. stillallbost08 yea TT must have crumbled last year when the B's made it to the playoffs and then forced a Canadians team predicted to run all over the B's and sweep them to an awesome 7 game series.

I don't think Bergeron should be on it, Kessel should be on over Bergeron.

That being said, the all star game in every league is just based on reputation and is a popularity contest, everyone knows that.

  1. To kind of sidetrack from any one particular snub, does anyone else feel like the NHL All-star ballot should be done just like baseball where one player at each position from each team is put on the general ballot and there is room for write in votes? The thing comes out so soon after the start of the season that a lot of guessing and hoping goes into who winds up on the ballot. We're really only voting for a starting line here, and the additional votes can help decide on additional players selected. Just a thought...

  1. stillallbost08.... you obviously don't know much about goaltending if you think he's a glorified beer leaguer. Did you hear some dolt say that in a locker room or did you make that up yourself? He has improved his technical saves and control quite a bit since coming to the Bruins. Having some creativity to back that up will only help. It's amazing that Hasek was praised his entire career for being unconventional but Thomas is being punished for it... No he's no Hasek but as others have stated #1 in save percentage #2 in GAA all while being a $1 million #1 goalie with a $4.3 mil backup.

  1. Semin instead of Koivu...
