Bruins, 3-2 (final)

From the broken-record department: Tim Thomas bailed the Bruins out yet again.

"That's why we have him," said Zdeno Chara. "He's playing well for us. Both goalies are playing really well. He's playing really solid. He's playing with a lot of confidence. You can see that. He's making a lot of good saves."

Thomas stopped 28 of 30 Toronto shots, most of them high-quality scoring chances from close range with traffic in front. Thomas was also helped by his posts, which kept several pucks from finding the back of the net.

"They were really trying to put the puck at the net and jam it home," said Thomas. "That's what you need to get offense."

* Michael Ryder busted a seven-game goal-scoring drought with his second-period roofer over Vesa Toskala. "I don't really shoot low much," Ryder said. "Just shot it and finally managed to go in."

* Phil Kessel took advantage of some too-deep positioning by Toskala to score his first-period goal. "He's deep in the net," Ron Wilson said of his goalie. "As a small goalie, he's got to get out of the net."

* Dennis Wideman led all players with an eye-popping eight blocked shots. Wideman, playing with Matt Hunwick during even-strength situations, also had a whopper of a giveaway in the second period with a forechecker in his face.

* Toronto recorded 30 shots on goal. The Leafs had 22 shots blocked and missed on 18 attempts. Make no mistake: They like to shoot the puck.

* Only two of Boston's 22 shots came on the power play (0 for 3). Conversely, Toronto ripped off 11 power-play shots.

STICK SALUTE: Marc Savard. Magic Marc had two helpers, including a perfect pinball off the right-side wall that landed on Phil Kessel's blade. Savard won eight of 13 faceoffs (62 percent efficiency rate).

SIN BIN: Patrice Bergeron. Two shots, two missed shots, three giveaways in 17:45 of ice time. Bergeron is playing like he's nursing an injury, which might be the case considering he sat out practice yesterday.

  1. Take it easy on Patrice. He isn't exactly back in top form, and hopefully he will be. Even if the offense hasn't come back yet, it should. in the mean time he has been a consistent 2 way player and helping out all around. his presence does alot for the team. he can come back after an injury like he had and expect to be where he was. Perhaps there is a little more too it right now, but it sounds as if your saying he is playing a little too timid. i don't think thats the case.

  1. Good points on the Leafs' shot totals - however, watching the Rogers broadcast, I learned that Ron Wilson's been telling them to shoot it wide of the net deliberately when they don't have a clear lane to the net - and that's what led to Blake's goal late in the first after White gathered it off the end boards. It's an interesting concept, especially if your home arena has live boards like that.
