B's unveil third jersey

Posted by Matt Porter, Globe Correspondent November 24, 2008 09:27 AM

The Bruins have some new threads to go along with their newfound winning ways. The team released its third jersey and uniform to the public this morning, showing off a predominantly black look that features the team's alternate logo as the main crest, with the Spoked-B on the shoulders.

According to a team release, the Bruins pro shop at the Garden will begin selling the sweaters today, and from 2 to 3:30 p.m., Bruins players including Patrice Bergeron, Zdeno Chara, Milan Lucic, Phil Kessel, Marc Savard, Tim Thomas and Blake Wheeler will be working the registers and helping customers in the Pro Shop, as well as signing autographs for anyone who purchases one of the new shirts. In addition to the in-store event, anyone who purchases a third jersey from today to Wednesday, Nov. 26 will get an autographed photo of their favorite Bruin, according to the release. For more info, call the Pro Shop 617.624.1500 or 877.527.8467, or visit BostonBruins.com.

The Bruins will wear the new sweater for 16 games during the remainder of the year, including Friday's "Black Friday" against the Islanders at the Garden. The first 10,000 fans in attendance will receive a commemorative black t-shirt, and the Bruins are encouraging all fans to come attired in black for the game. According to the team, the Day-After-Thanksgiving matinee has been a Bruins tradition since the 1990-91 season.

A list of the dates the Bruins will sport the new unis:
  • Nov. 28 vs. New York Islanders
  • Nov. 29 vs. Detroit
  • Dec. 13 vs. Atlanta
  • Dec. 20 vs. Carolina
  • Jan. 3 vs. Buffalo
  • Jan. 10 vs. Carolina
  • Jan. 19 vs. St. Louis
  • Jan. 21 @ Toronto
  • Jan. 29 vs. New Jersey
  • Feb. 10 vs. San Jose
  • Feb. 24 vs. Florida
  • Mar. 5 vs. Phoenix
  • Mar. 15 @ Pittsburgh
  • Mar. 31 vs. Tampa Bay
  • April 2 vs. Ottawa
  • April 7 @ Ottawa

So, what do you think? Personally, I like the look, mostly because I'm a fan of the new bear logo, which patrols the top of this little blog. In addition to being a throwback to the original B's crest, it looks much, much more fierce than the one featured on the team's previous third jersey. That bear that looked a little sleepy. This one looks ready to do some damage.

  1. I like, I like...I wish I could go to the game Friday too, I love when teams organize all the fans wearing one color, anyone remember the white outs in Phoenix? The seas of red in Calgary and Washington in the playoffs or all the orange for Philly.

  1. I agree, I like it too. It has that 80's B's uni feel with a modern twist with the new bear logo. I like loading up on black from head to toe.

  1. thankfully we've gotten rid of that pathetic one of Winnie the Pooh drowing in a vat of mustard. It was downright embarassing.

Nice look, pays tribute to the past. I may have to get one.

  1. Are the socks all black? Now that would be outstanding. Thumbs up on the jersey, by the way.

  1. Like the sweater, hate the stockings!
The gold stockings with black and white trim are unique to the NHL!
With the black stockings, they only become an imitation of other teams like the Flyers,Black Hawks etc.
You will never see proud teams like Montreal,Toronto,Rangers and Detroit ever give up their entire uniforms by changing their entire color scheme.

  1. I like it. A bit retro, which is almost always good.

  1. I agree with Billy Bee!
I love the sweater but wish the B's had kept their unique gold stockings.
Now the new uniform looks too much like Pittsburgh's.(ugh)

  1. Why change anything!!!! Certainly not when you are winning!!!!
    UGH!!

  1. They look bad ass, but could too much black hide the puck in front of Thomas?

Posted by frankiemills November 24, 08 12:53 PM
  1. I don't like the black, puck get's lost in the black background, hard for the goaltender to follow it.

  1. how can you say boston is copying other teams. boston is the original black and gold. every other team is copying boston. i love the all black from head to toe look. i think its intimidating. boston should always have that intimidating look in their third jersey. and since there colors are black and gold they have a right to.

  1. Not horrible. But needs more yellow at the waist part of the shirt. Maybe replicate the yellow & white armstripes at the base of the shirt.

I would have preferred to see a yellow version of the 'Spoked-B' jersey...like they had in the late 50's-early 60's. I think Providence has a version of that jersey and it looks great.

The Pooh Bear logo was the worst. Glad those are gone.

  1. It's so similar to the standard home jersey that one is left wondering what's the point. Why not have eighty-two different jerseys? You'd think that during such times someone would try to encourage restraint.

  1. take it easy those who dont like it, they wont be wearing it every day

Posted by mattyw November 24, 08 01:36 PM
  1. Jersey is great, but they need to keep the socks. It is critical to their identity. That said, this is far and away the best alternate jersey of the three teams that use them in Boston. But please reconsider the sock decision. Please!

  1. This sweater would make Mr. Blackwell cringe. The agony! The horror!
At least the regular unis aren't as hideous as their previous editions. I say go back to the Middleton-Neely era unis. Still sweet. Nothing says hockey like the black Bruins jerseys against the whites of the Habs at the Forum (or Bell Centre now).

  1. I miss the gold ones with the bear logo... Black is such a boring uni color. Couldn't they have put the new alternate logo on the gold sweater?

Posted by Mike November 24, 08 01:41 PM
  1. Another way for the Jacob's to make money ......4th , 5th jersey's coming soon before Christmas plus pink hats .... don't like it ....just play hockey

Posted by Nellie November 24, 08 01:56 PM
  1. Nothing wrong with A gold uni, but THE gold uni was terrible. The entire design was an embarrasment. They should go wicked old school and do the brown/white/gold kit...old time hockey

    Who calls them stockings? Seriously?

Posted by hondo November 24, 08 02:11 PM
  1. for general information - all NHL teams have a third jersey - we are not alone - I think retro is good for the Bruins - we want to bring back the teams that intimidated visitors to the Garden and we are beginning to do it - perhaps we will have another 1986 when all the Boston teams made it to the finals - even if the Red Sox, Patriots and Bruins did not end up winning the championship in their sports - who knows stranger things have happened - we should all be grateful for the way that the Bruins are playing now and hope that it continues through the rest of the season. . .

  1. Matt Porter,
I can't believe you like that. I hate it. They should be yellow with the same spoked B in the middle, just like the Baby B's have sported.
    With Love

  1. exactly how many bears are in boston?

    Posted by orr72 November 24, 08 03:16 PM
  1. Yellow/Gold is so minor league as a primary color. It looks awful. Yeah, we're the big bad bruins wearing Gold jerseys. 2 different kinds of Black is fine, 1 Black, 1 Brown would have been good too. But Gold is ugly as the main color on a jersey.

Posted by Mike November 24, 08 03:20 PM
  1. I think it's great and I'd like to encourage the sheep to continue to line the pockets of the Jacobs family.

Boston Bruins Incorporated. Motto: "Not good enough to win anything, but just good enough to keep enough lemmings spending money on us!"

Posted by Hoss November 24, 08 03:26 PM
  1. They should have brought back the 1970's home jersey instead with the Gold on the shoulders or make it the road jersey

Posted by Bobby Schmautz November 24, 08 03:30 PM

  1. I don't like that jersey at all, they really missed this one. They should have a done a gold/yellow type jersey like back in the day. They already have a black jersey!!!

    Go B's!!!

Posted by Jason November 24, 08 03:38 PM
  1. Hoss you are an idiot, every team has a 3rd jersey, they all used to but when RBK redesigned/developed new jerseys they scraped all the old 3rd jerseys. Every team is getting new ones introduced at some point this year

Posted by Mike November 24, 08 03:46 PM
  1. Agree with #12, go with the yellow '50's era jersey that the P-Bruins currently wear. Pay tribute to the Original Six.

Posted by brian November 24, 08 04:02 PM
  1. MUY ESTUPIDO! MUY, MUY ESTUPIDO!

Third sweaters are dumb. Dumber than pink hats.

And don't call them "jerseys", in hockey they're "sweaters".

Smoot does acknowledge third sweaters, nor does he recognize any more than six NHL teams.

Posted by RugBurn November 24, 08 04:47 PM
  1. Hoss, do you ever have anything good to say? You must be a freaking pleasure to be around!

    Posted by mvega$ November 24, 08 04:51 PM
  1. I am a STH holder to the Bruins and the Pats. I am on vacation this week so I ventured into the Garden around 10:30 and was 5th in line. The line was already snaked to the Museum of Science by 1:00.
Yes, I did puirchase two jerseys (Chara, Lucic) and had them autographed but it was worth the wait and the cost. I met the team and had a blast.
Sorry to say the Patriots do NOTHING for their season ticket holders besides here are the tickets and pay us now! Yes the team is good but no bone is ever thrown our way.
At least I will have a credit on my account when they miss the playoffs!!

  1. next year, something original...like a gold jersey with blue pinstripes!!! or one of those shirts that makes it look like you are a skeleton or a woman in a bikini.

Posted by Tom November 24, 08 05:08 PM
  1. It's the ugliest logo they have come up with yet! Stick with the "Spoked B"

    Posted by Hockeyfan4ever November 24, 08 05:14 PM
  1. I'd like it better with the gold socks and if it had some color on the bottom hem. I'd love it if it replicated the '80s and early '90s jerseys I grew up with. The all-black look just looks too much like something the Flyers would trot out.
I'd still love to see them wear the jerseys they wore in the NHL 75th season. Probably my favorite Bruins jersey of all time

    Posted by SPB27 November 24, 08 05:31 PM
  1. I wish I had the day off and $600 to toss away on two sweaters the team wont even be wearing in 2 or 3 seasons. Who buys a Chara sweater anyways?
Pretty much all 3rd jersey's are worthless in every sport, but compare the bruins 3rd sweaters to the rest of the leagues and they're not half bad. At least they don't say something stupid across the chest like "SENS" (Ottawa) or "BOLTS" (Tampa). That must be humiliating for Ottawa fan...and, anyone ever notice how Jack Edwards pronounce Ottawa "Ottawaaah"?

Posted by hondo November 24, 08 05:34 PM
  1. Better than the old gold ones, but still pretty blech. Third jerseys ought to be copies of retro versions with historical significance, like a '72 reissued from the cup winning team, a '67 from Orr's rookie year, or one like the old time one they had about fifteen years ago that had a similar logo to this one.

    Posted by Bouncer617 November 24, 08 05:40 PM
  1. Is it weird that the old third sweaters grew on me? I think I would pay money for the laugh of seing Chara in one now. I'll have to hold out judgment on the new ones until I see them in game (if that ever happens).

Posted by Brian November 24, 08 06:09 PM
  1. Time to go back to the 70s and 80s eara jersey patterns.

Posted by DML November 24, 08 07:21 PM
  1. I agree with comment 36: "Third jerseys ought to be copies of retro versions with historical significance, like a '72 reissued from the cup winning team, a '67 from Orr's rookie year", except I think they should go back even further. That's the beauty of being an Original 6 club, but B's failed to take advantage of it.

I like the idea of using their oldest logo as the crest here, but loathe the pin-striped, white lines...WAY too Pittsburghy looking. I won't buy one. They should survey/poll the fans online on various designs rather than just spring this stuff on people.

Posted by BruinsCountry November 24, 08 08:35 PM
  1. Excellent! A sharp look that honors the past. I was never into the "Fozzie Bear" alternate jerseys, and I didn't like "Bruins" written on the shoulder.

Posted by Jack Atkinson November 24, 08 09:26 PM
  1. It is a good ALTERNATE jersey..... the old and traditional one is much more solid and elegant in its simplicity!

Posted by hongkong guy November 25, 08 03:14 AM
  1. Hey BruinsCountry, those pinstriped white lines aren't on the jersey. This guy just put up a horrible picture in PDF format.

  1. Let's all agree,it is just a marketing ploy by Jeremy J. to make more money from us suckers but the new jersey is ok.,not great like the regular jersey, but ....ok.
What isn't good is the black stockings instead of the gold!
I'm going to feel guilty as if I'm cheering for Pittsburgh with this third uniform.
    In Sally G's word(s) UGH!

Posted by Pierre November 25, 08 11:59 AM
  1. I waited in line yesterday for over and hour and half in the freezing cold and still didn't make it inside in time to see the players, other than Lucic & Bergeron on their way out. To be fair I was told that by the time I was in line I wasn't guaranteed to get in, so oh well. To anyone who was there early enough to get inside, I hope you know how lucky you were cause there were plenty of people still behind me when they players had left. And credit to them, they did stay an hour or so longer than announced. And thanks to the people around me who let me get out of line to pee! It was quite a relief.

Posted by mikey November 25, 08 12:57 PM
  1. Pierre seriously you are a moron, along with everyone else thinking this a a ploy by the Jacobs' to get more money out of us 'sheep'. Around 18 teams in the league have 3rd Jerseys. Do you think the Jacobs clan is getting a cut from all 18 teams? Ugh. So sick of uninformed morons just spouting off garbage they read off a bathroom wall.

Posted by AL November 25, 08 04:36 PM
  1. Sorry Mr. AL (Jacobs):
Still don't like the black Pittsburgh stockings with a B's uniform.
Anyway,AL baby, your relative,Jeremy, will still makes lots of money on the third uniform so don't fret so much while you sit on the royal throne and text your misinformed messages!

Posted by Pierre November 25, 08 07:23 PM
  1. The only thing wrong with the "Pooh Bear" sweaters was the Pooh Bear. The yellow color scheme and design were fine. All they had to do is put a few teeth on the bear to make it a little more menacing, and the sweater would have been accepted.

    Posted by T A. Whelan November 26, 08 09:52 AM
  1. I am just amazed at the inept marketing people of this organization. This is an ORIGINAL SIX FRANCHISE!
The Bruins need to use history when it comes to uniforms. The current home/aways are pretty much a cluster of generations past thrown together which is OK in my book but the third uniform (if we even need to have one) is poor at best.
The only thing I like about the 3rd jersey is that they did away with any striping on the shoulders (the worst was the Fleetcenter jerseys with the striping going the arm length -- YUK!!)
The big killer for me about these third uniforms are the black socks, the Bruins have never worn BLACK SOCKS (absolute disgrace). Just as bad as the Winnie The Pooh 3rd which still boggles my mind as these 3rds saw 10 season!!
The Bruins would have hit it even bigger if they had used the 1980's and early 90's black jerseys and gold socks as I would have bought two authentics myself.
If only I could market the Boston Bruins.

Posted by ClassicB November 26, 08 10:25 AM
  1. I do quite enjoy my royal throne, now that you mention it. Best of luck with your 'sky is falling' campaign of idiocy.

Posted by AL November 26, 08 11:52 AM
  1. I don't get it ClassicB, you complain that "The Bruins need to use history when it comes to uniforms" but then you suggest uniforms from 20 years ago, that doesn't seem to be mining the deep history of the team. At least the main crest is going back to the begining of the franchise.

Posted by steve November 26, 08 12:45 PM
  1. Steve, to me the best history of this franchise was from the early 70's to the closing of the Boston Garden (1995). Hockey here in Boston was the talk of the town along with the Celtics during this time (with a few exceptions). The third jersey main crest is great when it's on the shoulders but looks kind of odd on the chest.

Posted by ClassicB November 27, 08 10:21 AM
  1. The B's haven't been the same since they took away the GOLD B on the black sweaters.

    Posted by Nigel B November 29, 08 03:07 PM
  1. I don't mind the third jersey, but it really should have the two gold stripes surrounding the white stripes at the bottom, and they need to wear the gold socks, get rid of those Penguin black socks. Another thing they should do is put some stripes on the pants. I don't know why they discontinued the pants stripe back in 1981. Put a gold stripe surrounded by two white stripes on the pants.

Would anyone entertain the Bruins wearing gold and brown, like they did up to 1936?
