Buffalo, 4-3

Posted by Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff November 19, 2008 07:57 PM

Mercifully, the first 20 minutes are over.

With neither team interested in playing defense, seven of 21 total shots found the backs of the nets. Uggggly.

* Of the four Buffalo goals, Manny Fernandez might have had a chance at stopping one: Thomas Vanek's first goal at 4:58 that made it a 3-1 score. Fernandez could have come out of his crease and cut down the angle. But Fernandez can't be blamed for the other three: Jason Pominville's jaw-dropping top-shelf backhander, Derek Roy's tip of Toni Lydman's point wrister, and Vanek's power-play redirect of Roy's pass.

* Beautiful diagonal outlet pass by Matt Hunwick to Phil Kessel that led to Marc Savard's goal. Hunwick, from deep in his own zone, snapped a cross-ice pass to Kessel to initiate the breakout. Hunwick looks more comfortable tonight than he did against Toronto.

* Still can't understand Brad Watson's interference call on Mark Stuart that led to Vanek's PPG. Stuart blasted Patrick Kaleta along the end boards with what looked like a clean hit.

* The mild-mannered David Krejci and P.J. Axelsson played with an edge in the first.
