Goodbye, November

Posted by Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff November 30, 2008 10:59 AM

The Bruins are closing out November with an off day today. This month, the Bruins went 11-1-1, kicking off November with a literal stomping of Dallas and ending it with a convincing win over the Stanley Cup champions.

With no media availability today, we'll most likely have to wait until tomorrow to get an update on Aaron Ward (leg).

On to Likes & Dislikes:

Likes

  • Depth. The biggest reason why the Bruins are where they are. Two goalies on sizzling runs. A potential No. 1 pivot in David Krejci centering the third line. Chuck Kobasew emerging in Marco Sturm's absence, getting second-line time and No. 1 power-play opportunities. A fourth line that isn't a defensive liability. The blossoming of Matt Hunwick after Andrew Ference was knocked out.

  • The space given to the No. 3 line of Krejci, Blake Wheeler, and Michael Ryder. On Wheeler's goal last night, Andreas Lilja, Niklas Kronwall, Jiri Hudler, Tomas Kopecky, and Valtteri Filppula were on the ice for Detroit. On Krejci's goal, Detroit had Lilja, Brett Lebda, Kopecky, Filppula, and Derek Meech on the ice. Boston's third line didn't have to go up against the likes of Nicklas Lidstrom, Brian Rafalski, Pavel Datsyuk, Marian Hossa, and Henrik Zetterberg on either goal.

  • Shane Hnidy. With Ward playing only 3:43, Hnidy logged a season-high 23:45 of ice time last night. Hnidy recorded one assist and was on the ice for three Boston goals.

    Dislikes

  • Chara's defensive lapses. Gave up an odd-man rush to Marian Hossa and Dan Cleary in the opening minute. Got caught up ice against Hossa later in the game. Gave away a puck to Jiri Hudler in the third period in the defensive zone. If Ward misses any games, Chara must tighten up defensively.

  • A layoff until Thursday. The way they're rolling, the Bruins want to keep playing games.

  • The end of November. The 11th month was very, very good to the Bruins.

    1. I agree on disliking Chara's play last night. I am not sure how he ended up as third star. Lots of poor stick handling by the big man.

    1. The "real" test for the B's will be upcoming games against Florida, Tampa Bay, and Atlanta. Those are the types of games that they have had trouble winning in the past.

    1. Uh Oh, we better start building a side cart to the band-wagon if they continue to put up these rediculously insane numbers....Especially if the Pats leave their "pink jersey fans" bored in January and February. Every game here on out is going to be at test for the B's, they have vaulted themselves into the elite cateogory of the league. I just hope the boys can handle that responsibility.

    1. Have to disagree about Chara. One give away, but Hossa at the line in the beginning of the gane hopped over Chara's stick-not much he could have done about that. If we did not have Chara we would be .500 at best.

    1. While I feel Chara is extremely valuable to the Bruins, I feel it's a bit unfair and exaggerated to claim the Bruins would be a .500 team at best without him. Basically, you're contributing the Bruins success as a TEAM to one player.

Without Chara, we may not be where we currently are in the standings, but we would certainly be above .500. To claim otherwise is to completely discredit the hard work the other players have put in.

    1. Chara may not have been perfect but how about Wideman playing almost 30 minutes on Saturday. He is emerging as this teams number one dman and a great offseason resign. As well as Boyes is doing in STL I think that this trade has favored Boston, great defensement like Wideman are hard to come by.

I love watching this team, I hope for another great month although I'm not going to set my expectations to a record like this for December. If they do, however, this team should win the cup haha

    1. Where does one start...for the first time since the 70's whenever I wear my Bruins gear people on the street, super market, bus, subway put on that big smile and have some "way to go Bruins" comment to offer. Full disclosure, I have been a dual citizen of HockeyTown for quite some time now and Saturday night's game was a dream come true. The team of my heart playing the Wings, the team I admire from afar. Bruins seemed to play as though they were in awe of those guys for the first 8 minutes or so; back on their heels, missing passes, hemmed in their own zone. The Wings slowly unravelled to the point that they were playing dump and chase and not their usual possession game. Manny, aided by his best friends in iron, came up big. But mynumber one star goes to the fans. It was not until the Garden faithful began the "Let's go Bruins" chant that the black and gold struck with the first goal. Even Holmstromless, the Wings were a huge test and the Bruins are the real deal.

    1. Likes - 11 Wins , 3rd line and 4th line contributing nightly, Winning games they should. Keeping Ryder on 3rd line. Hunwick's surprising play , the new 3rd jersey

Dislikes - not many to point out, Axelson on 3rd line should be on 4th line when Sturm is back, Hnidy's been ok, hasnt hurt the team , just not comfortable with him out there

Needs - Better offensive putout from Bergeron and Ryder, more playing time for Stuart to lessen load on Wideman, seemed a little tired lately. Keep playing consistantly

Krejci. The man is skating mojo dispenser. every time they put someone in a slump on his wings and just watch. He's cool under pressure and makes smart plays.

Kobasew. The mans hustle is insane, he's probably not gonna be giving Ovechkin and Vanek a run for the scoring title, but he's may just be the most entertaining person to watch on the team simply because he seems to make things happen on will power alone.

      Dislikes:
Dump and Chase. I loathe this style of play, and it's never a good sign when they start doing it. They did this in the first half of period 1 against the Wings and didn't get a single shot on goal until they started carrying it. I could tell when they were going to lose last year because they would start all two or all three periods this way.

Half periods. They seem to taking half of some periods off, It almost burned them against Detroit, it did burn them several times in the first two or three weeks of the season.

      Neutral.
Chara. Chara has not been playing _badly_ he also hasn't been playing at a Norris level. Fortunately he really hasn’t needed to play like last seasons juggernaut yet. Ference was top notch until he was hurt, Stuart is playing a decent amount of PK, and Wideman and Hunwick have provided some scoring for the D. The shoulder surgery really took its toll on him, but watching the video of him walking in and smiling for the first time on game day in months is encouraging. He also delivered a couple of wicked hits during the Detroit game.
