Sturm doubtful for tonight

Posted by Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff November 21, 2008 11:57 AM

Marco Sturm, who didn't skate this morning, will most likely not be available tonight against Florida. If Sturm can't play, the Bruins will feature the same lineup from Wednesday's 7-4 win over Buffalo.

* The Bruins will unveil their third jersey on Monday at 2 p.m. at the TD Banknorth Garden pro shop. Patrice Bergeron, Zdeno Chara, Milan Lucic, Phil Kessel, Marc Savard, Tim Thomas, and Blake Wheeler will be working the counters at the pro shop between 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. They will be available for autographs. The Bruins will wear the third jersey for the first time next Friday against the Islanders.

* Matt Lashoff reports that Zach Hamill is scheduled to play for the first time this weekend for Providence. Hamill has been out the entire year following surgery to repair ligaments in his thumb. Hamill has been skating with the P-Bruins during practice with a large mitten covering his cast, according to Lashoff.

Tonight's expected lineup:

Milan Lucic
Marc Savard
Phil Kessel
P.J. Axelsson
Patrice Bergeron
Michael Ryder
Blake Wheeler
David Krejci
Chuck Kobasew
Shawn Thornton
Stephane Yelle
Petteri Nokelainen
Zdeno Chara
Aaron Ward
Matt Hunwick
Dennis Wideman
Mark Stuart
Shane Hnidy
Tim Thomas
Manny Fernandez

  1. Will Thomas play back to back? i would think Manny would start tonight and Thomas against Montreal tomorrow?

  1. Hmmm, unfortunatly, I think they want to keep Manny against the habs like the last time. Im kinda okay with that since Thomas seems to have problems agains them. But at the same time, Manny always seem shaky out there. We'll see how it turns out.

  1. Thank God they got rid of the stupid looking bear third jersey. It was by far the worst uniform in the NHL. Let's hope the new third jersey is better!

  1. I like the idea of thomas starting tonight and manny against the habs. I still don't feel very confident with Timmy against the Habs for some reason. I would be curious to see a breakdown of Thomas' stats against each team and which ones he has the toughest time against.

  1. Sorry to get off the Manny / Thomas subject but...
Is it just me or is Axe still twirling around the second line? Yes, i understand his "hockey-IQ" but the guy has not scored in 16 games! His lack of production is being over-shadowed by the amazing streak the B’s been in. Regardless of the recent success i still think that's an area of concern. Hopefully Sturm comes back tomorrow and goes on the line with Bergeron and Ryder. Now that I mention Ryder, i almost feel bad for the guy. It's not like he is taking games off or anything. He has been battling and hustling his butt off all year. Poor guy has hit about 8 posts this year. Now Bergeron sort of concerns me a little bit, although he did have about 5 glorious chances to score early on in the season, looks like he is lacking confidence out there. He has been taking a lot of shots but not high quality ones. If you notice on the power play he tends to give up that one-timer he used to take religiously in seasons past. That being said though I believe another part of it is having a “defense-first” winger in Axelsson on his left wing, which does not allow plays to develop for Bergeron and Ryder. They need that “threat” and Sturm fits the bill perfectly. I doubt Julien will break up that young-guns line in Wheeler – Krejci – Kobasew so I’m assuming that will eventually be moved to the fourth line with Yelle and Thorton. I still find it amazing how the Bruins are becoming an offensive powerhouse without any or little production from their most complete player and a guy that can easily turn it on and score in bunches. So in reality the team has not actually hit on all cylinders as of yet, scary isn’t it?

  1. The third jersey is more of a throw back to the original six days...the main logo is similar to the logo they have on each shoulder...with the picture of the bear and Bruins written over it...Anything is better than those pooh bears

  1. I never liked the B's yellow bear jersey but there is nothing worse than the Predators 3rd "mustard color" jersey. That thing was brutal.

  1. Hopefully more NHL Goalies go down, or just stink, as the season wears on and Manny plays OK for his 33% starts. Then we can trade Manny for a prospect and a bag o donuts, and bring up Tukka from PVD. I said it, so?

  1. As he proved in Western Canada, Tim Thomas can go back to back. Tim Thomas is the smart pick. Fernandez's record belies the fact that he's been shaky this season. Fernandez beat Montreal this season, but it was more the fact that Montreal (especially Carey Price) played poorly. Montreal had very few quality shots on Manny.

  1. When has PJ Axelsson ever been a goal scorer? That isn't his role. I'm sorry, but if you don't understand what kind of value he provides, you don't understand hockey.

I was at the game Wednesday night and saw Axelsson prevent a clear breakaway with a stupendous diving poke check. That doesn't show up on the score sheet, but it's the sort of play that wins you hockey games.

  1. PJ is a fill in until Marco returns; Bergeron and Ryder do need to get it going offensively, and what balance we'll have when they do. I'm not sold on Thomas as an everyday goalie. His style wears him down and makes him prone to injury. Can't wait for Rask to develop into a real number 1. The Teddy Bear pajamas were awful, looked like a big gravy stain. I hear the new ones are good.

  1. Axey is a good player and a great grinder. He's not a second line forward though. This however isn't a problem right now since the other three lines are scoring. If the B's were struggling to put up goals and win games, it would be a bigger deal. Duinne is right though, there is a lot more that goes into a hockey game than offense.
All that said, he's killing me on that line since Bergy's on my fantasy team and should be putting up more points but doesn't play on a true #2 line with true #2 line TOI per game...

  1. No way Rask is looking like NHL material. I have yet to see him "stand on his head" for the PBruins. He IS playing out of the net now, a problem he dealt with last year but Rask seems to struggle mentally and needs to be peppered in order to boost his confidence and defend the net. Its still early but lets see what he can do...

  1. Just heard the owner of the Canadiens on Montreal radio www.team990.com say that Laraque will be active tomorrow night in Montreal. Does Boston have someone to throw at him rather than wasting a valuable player on a useless 4th liner?

  1. Ever hear of Shawn Thornton? That will be the man.

Posted by RJ November 22, 08 12:00 AM
  1. RJ I know. But every player on the Bruins roster is a better hockey player than Laraque. The Canadiens would benefit by losing a one dimensional goon to one of our guys.
