Awaiting Bergeron update

Posted by Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff December 21, 2008 10:44 AM

ST. LOUIS -- Good morning from a blustery St. Louis, where the high temperature is expected to top out 16 degrees. And that's before you factor in the wind chill.

The Bruins will not skate this morning. They are expected to arrive at the Scottrade Center at approximately 3 p.m. EST. If there's any new information on Patrice Bergeron, we should expect to hear it then.

* Many thanks to the Bruins for providing a seat on their charter after my flight out of snowbound Boston was scrubbed. American Airlines rescheduled me to arrive in St. Louis tomorrow at 4:40 p.m. Obviously, that wasn't a feasible option.

  1. Glad to see you reporting in, Fluto. I was wondering if ANYONE was getting out of Boston last night. Happy to hear everyone's safe and sound.

  1. Not to sound ghoulish but if Bergeron goes LTD then the B's could pick up the stud Dman they are missing for the playoffs. Bergeron is rapidly becoming the 3rd line center on this team whether people want to admit it or not....and 3rd line centers don't make $5M in the salary cap era. There's not enough money to go around

  1. Not like the old days, when sports writers would be getting drunk with the B's on the plane, hey Fluto?

  1. Yes, ugly day at Logan. Lots of red on the board. My flight kept getting delayed by half-hour increments, then finally wiped out by mid-afternoon. What can you do except be thankful there was another option. Though they tucked me in the baggage compartment next to the smelly uniforms... just kidding.

For God's sake, stop. Please. Enough already. For one thing, yes, you are sounding ghoulish. For another thing, if you've ever watched Bergeron play in person, you would realize he is one hellacious hockey player, and lastly, if I hear one more time about how to "fix" this team, I'm going to lose my mind.

  1. Someone needs to exterminate the bug that has crept into the B's dressing room.
With that being said, I am interested in seeing if Sobotka and Krecji line up together this evening from the start.

  1. I totally agree with Nash, it's a real shame what happened to Bergy last year. He's made so much progress and I honestly thought he was coming into his own of late..Good luck Bergy, hopefully it's not to serious.

  1. Don't lose your mind duinne..we can't have bruin fans receiving shock treatment..lol Can I tell you how I could fix this team for good?? lol lol I love Sobotka, this guy makes things happen. He's so strong with the puck, especially how he holds off the defenders all the while cradling the puck..He's going to be a huge surplus if Bergy goes out long term..

  1. Its sad to see Bergeron get himself into a situation like that, I'm sorry but he hasn't played well of late- it just doesn't look like hes hungry for it anymore. I never see him really hustling and he always makes the safe short play then heads to the bench. I know he had to recover from last yrs incident, but he hasn't been the old Bergeron all year. Thats why I was surprised to see that he was trying to make contact in center ice. Anyway I hope he gets better.

  1. Dan, how many games have you seen in person? I was at the game Thursday night and was extremely impressed with Bergeron. His name isn't all over the stat sheet, but he's an extremely smart hockey player who does all the little things right, which is why he's on both the PK and the PP. And yes, he hustles his tail off. Goal-scoring is not the be all and end all.

  1. Duinne, I have seen my share of games..You must admit his game is not what it was.. He does work his ass off and made a remarkable comeback.. I truely thought he was just coming to his own recently, until this...this is not good!! It's confirmed another concussion..This reminds me of defending PJ....

  1. You have to see him play in person to appreciate how well he does everything. I know I'm always on here talking him up, but I've been watching him in games and practices for years, and he's exceptional.

He's one of those guys that if there was a camera just on him all night people would see all the stuff he does right. Watch him in the corners scrumming for the puck, or watch how he gets the better body position on guys all night. All the stuff that happens 30 seconds before the big play everyone in the stands notices.

He definitely does not have "dazzle you out of your seat" moves, and his shot is only OK, but there's not a lot of guys that play all over the ice as well as he does.

That said, I'm very bummed about this latest concussion. We were at the game last year when he got hurt, and I've thought since then he was much more badly injured than they were saying. As far as we could see, and we were pretty close, he was still out, or close to it, when they were taking him out. In other words, a lot longer than 45 seconds.

I know what they said but we were right there. If he was truly conscious before he was wheeled out I didn't see it. If I'm right and he wasn't, it was more like 30 minutes, and that's closer to "coma" than unconscious. Which would explain his symptoms and long recovery period.
