Bergeron concussion confirmed

Posted by Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff December 21, 2008 03:06 PM

General manager Peter Chiarelli confirmed that Patrice Bergeron suffered a concussion yesterday when he collided with Carolina's Dennis Seidenberg.

"After first being treated at the TD Banknorth Garden yesterday, Patrice was diagnosed as having sustained a concussion, and was admitted to Mass. General Hospital under the care of Dr. Peter Asnis," Chiarelli said in a statement. "Since being admitted to MGH Patrice has undergone extensive testing, and all of the results have come back normal. When examined this morning, his condition had improved greatly over last night, and he was released from the hospital. There is no timetable for his return to the ice."

  1. SOP that he's out a week, is that correct, Fluto?

Sounds like it could have been a lot worse. Thanks for the quick report.

  1. I'll be surprised if he comes back at all..They take these head injuries pretty serious now.. After my first major concussion..all it took was a punch to the head to inflame it again. Not good! Take care of yourself Bergy..That's the most important thing..

  1. I'm obviously not Fluto, but it is my understanding the NHL requires all players diagnosed with a concussion to sit out at least a week. Knowing Patrice's past and how well the team is doing right now, I imagine we wouldn't see him for at least a couple weeks.

As for him sitting out until the playoffs, I don't see that happening -- wouldn't be wise to "ease" him back into NHL play when it's at its top speed come playoff time.

Whatever happens, I'm sure we all hope this doesn't take him down the same path as Lindros, et al...

  1. I don't think there's a timetable for how long you are out. I worked with a college football team and it was twenty four hours after the last sympton of a concussion was felt.

  1. Patrice is all done, sadly.

He needs to get on with the rest of his life... and live it to its fullest. At only 23 yo, with a nice little career behind him, the world is his oyster. Opportunities exist galore.

    Good luck Bergy!!

  1. I was hoping it was just a neck or maybe shoulder , oh well...
He'll get through it but as most of you I agree to take the time. All depending how bad of a concussion it is. If he's rushed in too fast we might loose him again. He's an importand piece of Julien's puzzle on a defensive scheme of things, Important !
His numbers cannot be compaired to before his injury last year.
No need to panic as we need to move fwd without him, that's it !
