NYC dining report

Posted by Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff December 23, 2008 05:29 PM

Yesterday's plan was to hit Brooklyn and make my first visit to Peter Luger for a steak. Alas, I made the rookie mistake of not making a reservation, and was promptly turned away at approximately 6 p.m. (mobbed despite the early hour). Not even the old standby -- "But, but, but, I know Kevin Paul Dupont!" -- did the trick.

Second option was to drive around and stop at the first reputable joint. Found a Dominican place that looked promising. One that shot up even a few more points when I walked in to see New York's finest. Always a good sign when cops are regular diners. Went with an excellent pollo frito and papas fritas (my Spanish was ruuuusty). Some of us just have the dining equivalent of hockey sense, ya know?

Today, after the morning skate, took the train into the city for lunch at Ess-A-Bagel (51st and 3rd). Bagels there are bigger than frisbees. About three times bigger than their Montreal counterparts. And tastier.

The traveling puck hack scores again.

  1. Ess-a-Bagel at 20th and 1st is the real deal. The one in the 50s is a catering spot and theyre bagels are not as fresh and more expensive!

  1. Wolfgangs on Park is excellent...sparks sucks since they blew out the walls six or seven years ago....stay away for Smith and Wolly's...Bobby Vans in the Hemsley building is actually very good for steak as well. But lugers ("steak for two") is the top, no doubt, but you gotta get a resi...don't forget to get "schlag" with your desert....if you do get to Lugers, gotta gotta get the bacon...great bacon at Wolfgangs too....Wolfgang an old Lugers waiter.
