St. Pierre assigned; Bergeron on IR

Posted by Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff December 31, 2008 10:11 AM

Martin St. Pierre has been assigned to Providence. St. Pierre appeared in five games for the big club, scoring a shorthanded goal last night against Pittsburgh. St. Pierre's assignment indicates that Petteri Nokelainen will be ready for tomorrow's rematch against the Penguins.

Also, Patrice Bergeron has been placed on injured reserve, meaning he will be out at least the next seven days. The 23-year-old center, who has four goals and 14 assists in 31 games this season, suffered a concussion Dec. 20 against the Hurricanes after colliding with another player. By placing him on injured reserve, the Bruins are permitted to replace him on the roster.

Given his concussion history -- Bergeron played in only 10 games last season after absorbing a brutal hit against the boards against the Flyers last Oct. 27 -- it appears the Bruins are being appropriately cautious.

  1. Really . Does it have to do with either one having to pass waivers ?

  1. Nokke would have to clear waivers, so yes...it is all about that and why Sobotka has been in Providence as well.
Chia can't exactly try to send Noke down and have someone pick him up and lose the 2nd rounder he sent to Islanders for him with getting nothing in return...

  1. Done for the year, and possibly career. Sad but true.

  1. Nokke was aquired via trade with NY Islanders for Ben Walter and a conditional 2009 draft pick.

  1. How does seven days equal the whole year.......? Play or don't play it's as simple as that. Most boxers get knocked out at least once a year. They get back in the ring. You can either live your life or lay in bed all day. You take a chance with everything you do in life and when you make $5m to take a chance that's not much of a gamble in my book. If Bergeron walks away at 23 with $10m in the bank I think alot of people would trade places with him in a second. I'm not going to worry about what Bergeron is going to do with the rest of his life. Norm Leveille was a tragedy. This is not a tragedy.

  1. People are idiots to think he is done. I think he just put himself into a bad situation and must get stronger. He will be back, hes a smart player and will work it out. He is still only 23, when your young and healthy like that people can heal incredibly well. I think it might take a whole season or even two to be back where he was before Randy Jones hit him from behind. goodluck Bergeron!

  1. That conditional pick was a 2nd rounder due to the amount of games he played last year.
    Walter is a non factor.

  1. When the brain tissue rattles against the back wall too often.....there's little you can do. Prolongment of the inevitable is a class act by the B's upper management. But the kid could skate.....how I loved to watch him skate.
