Morning briefing

Posted by Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff January 1, 2009 10:16 AM

Good morning from TD Banknorth Garden, where the Bruins will look to extend their home winning streak to 14 games tonight against Pittsburgh. Happy New Year to all.

Some tidbits from the game notes:

* Martin St. Pierre has been recalled from Providence on an emergency basis. Will seek some clarification on this transaction. Perhaps another injury has taken place, or maybe this was always the plan following his assignment yesterday.

UPDATE: St. Pierre will take the place of Petteri Nokelainen, who was once assumed fit to play tonight.

* The Penguins are playing their first game since calling a team meeting on Tuesday after the 5-2 home loss to the Bruins. Be interesting to see how they come out tonight.

* The Bruins closed out the last two months with a 23-2-1 record.

* David Krejci is riding a nine-game point streak (5-11--16).

* Eric Furlatt and Greg Kimmerly will be the referees. Derek Amell and Tony Sericolo will be the linesmen.

  1. This is a question for Fluto. What constitutes an "emergency recall"? Does this mean that St. Pierre needs to go back to the AHL after this game? Or is something like the ability to call up a player who was just sent down?

  1. St. Pierre needs to go back once Nokelainen is ready to play. Players are brought up on emergency when the team has less than 12 healthy forwards, six healthy defensemen, and two healthy goalies.
