No bonus for Kessel
Phil Kessel, who was certainly deserving of an All-Star selection, will miss out on a $212,500 bonus because he didn't make the roster.
Because this is Kessel's final season of his entry-level contract, he will not be eligible for All-Star bonuses on his next deal.

And there is your reason, folks. Team Jacobs lobbies behind the scenes to deny Kessel, saving a quarter of mil!
Cha Ching.
Riiiiiiight, the last thing they want is a lot of Bruins in the All-Star game...
Swimmer- you have been swallowing to much water. Get off Team Jacobs. They have always spent money, including paying for the new garden. Where they failed was entrusting the team to the likes of Sinden and O.C. Stop Hate'in and start suporting this club with all the new blood on board and in the right direction! It wasn't Team Jacobs that lost in the 1st round of the playoffs to the Canadiens pre-strike, when the B's had the best regular season record, and the highest payroll in the league! Negativity was old Boston, get with the times!
The team should give it to him anyway, and make a point of publicly saying that he should have been an All-Star if it weren't for the voting fraud by the Montreal fans.
What if he's added as an injury replacment like Thomas & Savard were last year? Still no bonus?
Don't feed the trolls.
Does this mean more cap money.....could figure in with IR players or a trade.
I agree with The Mad Doctor. I think the Jacobs family should do the right thing and give him the money. I doubt they will, but I hope they do. Not only is it the right thing to do, but it could pay dividends in the future if it helps to keep him on the team later on when he becomes a FA
bizona - SPOT ON!
Kessel will get his $$ after this season regardless, he is RFA and up after this season. Looking at what Staal got today, I am sure he will be in that ballpark.
I am sure Kessel will be one of the first players to get the call if someone gets hurt or bows out of the ASG....on another note, good to know that biting someone's finger gets you the same suspension as nearly putting Berger in a wheelchair for life. Way to go Colin Campbell!!
Come on people, let's get real. Whether or not the Jacobs family wanted to or not, you can't just give a player $200K. There are things called a CBA and Salary Caps that prevent teams from giving their players "free" money.
As much as I would like to agree with you, bizona, it simply doesn't make much sense. It's a contractual agreement for a reason. You either do A to get B or you don't. It's pretty cut and dry. If you contract states you'd get a bonus for getting 30 goals, and you said contract, then you do not and should not get the bonus for getting 29 goals.
But that's what contracts are about... incentives. The Bruins don't need to give Kessel an extra 200 grand in good faith that he'll resign... the Bruins should just offer him a new contract when the time is right with more 'incentives'. That's what gets players to sign.
But no matter how much you like a player or they contribute, "close" just isn't good enough.
I agree 100% with Bizona and The Mad Doctor.
I'm just enjoying the notion of Canadiens fans taking marching orders from the owner of the Bruins.
I Think Savard should come up with a Hammy 'injury' and sit out the All-Star game, Kessel would very likely be his replacement. Then Kessel can buy Savard a Car. Get er done.
Reality doesn't live here, Eric. *snicker*
Kessel was robbed, the voting is a farce.
Let's accept it and move on. No need to get our panties in a bunch over some automatic voting machine. Yeah it sucks, but the all star game is for the fans and the Montreal fans will get what they want.
Do what I do - don't watch the game. It's not hockey - there's no contact, and it's as big of a joke as the voting process. The weekend is fun for kids and stuff, and the skills comp is cool, but the game itself is a joke. If you don't like the idea of it, like I don't then don't watch it. Simple enough.
I really wish I proofread sometimes... *If your contract states... *and you signed said contract... *re-sign... *how much they contribute...
Whoa everybody. I like Kessel as much as the next guy and maybe even more, but he is at best a borderline All star. Granted there are Habs that don't belong on the list, but will folks go to their grave saying that after 2.5 seasons Phil is one of the 12 best forwards in the conference? Do I need to whip out a list of players not making the squad? Keeping in mind that much of the requisite attributes to be an All Star is based on past performance? 24 goals is very nice, and a great improvement, but he's not carrying the team and doesn't check. He will be an All Star someday when he gets a 50 on his resume or a couple 40s in a row.
The Hockey Mafia strikes again!
How did the Jacobs people make their money in the first place?
Kessel is on pace to earn his $850,000 maximum in Individual A bonuses despite not making the All-Star team. And yes, if he becomes an injury replacement, he will make the $212,500 bonus.
//I Think Savard should come up with a Hammy 'injury' and sit out the All-Star game//
You must be joking. Check the Bruins site. Savard's entire family is going to be there. He would't miss that weekend if Kessel bought him a Caribbean island.
Kessel lawsuit against NHL and Habs ... lol...
One thing I did not like about the voting on NHL.com the sait says:
// vote for your favorite player // not the best players but your favorite !!!
Wouldn't that work against Kessel also ...... The voting started in the summer even before he had this great start of a season. Was still an unknown.
Alexei Kovalev is not stealing Kessel's place in the ASG. Backstrom, Elias, Richards, Gagne should all be ahead of Kessel anyway.
And while it may be fun to join the sheep in bashing Kovalev for winning the fan vote, think about this: Why would he be less deserving to go to the ASG than Stall, Heatley or Lecavalier?
Heatley and Stall were there last year and they ended that season with less points than Kovalev.
And what happened last year does matter. The fans who voted for Kovalev were right to take that into account, else you'd just have whoever gets hot early in the season. (Wasn't Brian Savage Mr. October?)
And what did Kessel do last year? 37 points versus Kovalev's 84?
Phil Kessel's time will come. But this year, Montrealers want to show off their star attacker to the rest of the league.
This thread is irrelivant now. Kellel is out for a month IR.
