Coach Claude Julien just announced that Michael Ryder is undergoing surgery ''right now'' and the club will have more to say about the extent of the surgery and a projected return date later today.

Ryder sustained a fractured orbital bone Thursday when high-sticked late in the Bruins' 4-3 victory at Ottawa.

Asked if Ryder might wear a cage, or protective visor upon his return, Julien said that ''is a no-brainer.''

  • Tim Thomas on Joe Thornton's top skill: ''The best thing he does is getting passes to guys when they're in scoring position. Not just passes, but passes to guys when they're in great places on the ice -- and you don't know which guy it will be, either.''

  • Following Saturday's OT loss to the Flyers, Julien felt his club showed signs of fatigue, in part due to a very busy playing schedule the past two weeks.

''I think we've played something like eight games in 12 days,'' said team captain Zdeno Chara, asked about Julien's comments. ''So, it's possible [the team is tired]. Sometimes, when you are playing back-to-back afternoon games . . . here in Boston, then in Canada . . . maybe it is tiring, and you don't feel fresh.''

''We seemed to have more energy today,'' said Julien, noting the players had time off Saturday, following the matinée, and also were off all day Sunday to aid in the rest 'n' recovery.

  • Julien said after the workout that the flu bug continues to go around his club, although everyone skated in the workout. He also said if he felt the need to add a forward then the club could bring someone up quickly from Providence.

  • Asked if he ever played against Claude Lemieux, who is now suiting up for the Sharks, Julien said, ''Yes . . . and I made one of the dumbest comments I've made to a player,'' said a smiling Julien. ''And I'll leave it at that.'' The comment, Julien later added, was made in the penalty box.
