Globe 10.0: Do the Bruins need to make a trade?
With the trade deadline on Wednesday, Bob Ryan and Kevin Dupont debate whether or not the Bruins need to make a trade. Agree with Ryan and KPD? Let us know what you think.

KPD, nice tie! Is it Old Spice or Brut on Ryan?
KDP is probably right, they don't _need_ anything major. They could get better with a left handed shot for the PP and who can toss in the odd goal and I'd rather see them go for a winger/forward than a blueliner if they only make one move before the deadline.
This is the only logical move I see the Bruins making. Go big with Pronger or a replacement for Sturm, or sit tight with what you have and ride the course. I for one am all for Pronger with the Bruins, but if Chiarelli didn't move Kessel for Hossa, he isn't going to move Kessel for Pronger!
With Marco out, we need a scoring safety, and may be even a good D man.
This team doesn't NEED to make a move, but all I see is us signing Thomas & Fernandez going away at the end of this season for nothing. I'd make a move that included Fernandez for a positino player & bring up Rask.
Clearly, the B's struggle against big teams like the Caps. The Caps are looking at Bill Guerin, which will make them that much more menancing, and the Devils also improved today with the acquisition of Havelid.
My solution is bold, albeit maybe not popular. Timmy Thomas is going to be more expensive to resign than Manny, esp coming off an all-star appearance and Vezina-type season. This also means his trade value has perhaps never been higher. Shop Thomas to teams that are looking to sell and in need of goaltending help (Hello, Ottawa Senators) for some bodies, whether thats on the blue-line or on the left side up-front.
The OT goal Timmy let in against Was highlights my issue with him - imagine if that had been OT of Game 7, losing on a 75 ft slapper like that...ridiculous, and it should never happen, but with Timmy the bad goal is a frequent occurance.
Bring Rask up, he's more than capable and ready, and if Manny falters, go with Tuuka
Go Bruins!!!!
If you could get something for either Fernandez or PJ then I say pull the trigger. I hear a lot about moving Kessel and I think that's a BAD idea. I think this team will settle back down once the trade deadline passes. Everyone's got to be jittery with all the trade talk.
Sapper_Bloggins - another commentor that I'm glad is not the GM for the Bruins.
I want Derek Morris and Steve Reinprect from PHX!!!
Hey Sapper, probably the dumbest post I've seen all year (and that includes the Habs fans).
NO NO NO! You don't get rid of kessel for chris pronger; maybe the chris pronger of five years ago, not this CP. NO NO NO. We've been looking for a pure goal scorer for too long and to just ship out Phil would be a huge mistake. Chiarelli has already made it a point to say that he'd rather not sacrifice the youth, if they get rid of kessel that just shows that the bruins are going for it all this year or next. no one wants that. as much as i'd like a cup this year, i'd like us to be consistently in the top tier of the east for the next 5-6 years.
Erik Cole or a big move like Pronger or Big time offensive player.
I'am not sure we NEED anything. I would WANT us to make the following move(s):
1. We need to trade Manny Fernandez or resign him. I think that Manny will provide some interest around the league and it will only save us money $$ in the future. Rask is ready to be a back up for Timmy...
2. I would want a power forward such as R.Smyth(COL), M. Fisher (OTT),etc
3. I would love to get a defenseman Pronger being my first choice, but not at the expense of Kessel,Krejci,Luci,Wheeler,Bitz, etc lol Bouwmeester, D. Morris, B.Witt, etc. Overall if we didn't make any moves I would be happy with the team we have and please do not trade for Antropov or C. Neil
trade fernandez now.we will get nothing for him later and wont use him in the playoffs anyway.Do not trade Kessel duh leading goal scorer while missing a month.I would trade pj if we could get anything sorry I hate him always turns the wrong way and he's a ufa.Dump Bergerons salary love him but not the same player.pj+bergeron+Fernandez=what 10 million or so.
Sapper is obviously Milbury's online persona. Please do not trade for Chris Pronger. Teams that make the big splash at the deadline DO NOT win the Cup. Add a character guy, a depth veteran, if anything. DO NOT mess with this team's chemistry.
timmy the tank thomas is one of the reasons that the bruins are at where they at so trading him would be retarded, the last thing the bruins need to do is screw up the best goalie tandem in the nhl what we want is jordan leapold and marek svatos those are the players that the bruins should be targeting
Ditto on the Dope Slap to Sapper. Are you KIDDING! He's the Vezina. All together now - What wins Stanley Cups? That's right.. Goaltending! I'm a little torn about the Pronger talk. Kessel is only a kid, and he's most threatening goal scorer on the club. You take him out of the equation and I don't think you've gained much. Now if we could package Bergeron and a pick it may be worth it - especially since the salaries match a little better. Lastly - they need to get Lucic healthy and hyperactive again - he's the grease that makes 'em roll.
we need to get the two bodies from the ducks pronger and moan, trade kessel he doesn't like boston or even the bruins team keep krejci but we need the defensive help and left wing help....... do the damn thing
lol @ Sapper.....
Let's face it, we would beat NJ solely on luck in a best of 7. They beat us in offense, goal tending AND defense....but were NOT far off.
I say go after 2 minor acquisitions, such as WITT And TKACHUK. Or Witt and Lombardii, or KUBA and Cole/Tkachuk. Wouldnt cost us too much, not expensive, and will help both our problems, a winger for Bergeron/Kobasew and another solid Defense.
We def cant do anything and expect a CUP, a possibility, but I wouldn't bet on it.
Please, no kessel for pronger. If a left handed shot comes back for non-roster players do it, if Kaberle comes for a package not including kessel, krecji, or wheeler do it. If not, sit pat, we're wicked good.
Sapper_Bloggins...how clueless are you? Why would Ottawa trade for Thomas for this year? They are not going anywhere, and Thomas is FA at year's end. Why would they give up anything for a rent-a-player for the remainder of this year?
I do agree that Rask is the future, not sure I want to risk this season on his shoulders.
We also need to think through if we are going to mortgage the entire future (i.e.: trade Milan, David K., Phil K.) to win this year. If so, Phil K. seems to have the most upside for a "dealing" team, and as such, should return the best asset in a trade. However, if we are going to look beyond this year, with the cap and the salary issues we are going to face for our major players (i.e.: Chara, Savard, Thomas, etc. coming to the end of their deals), we need to be realistic about resigning are key players going forward (again, Chara, Savard, Thomas, etc.) Living in the world of a salary cap, can we afford to sign all our FA at year end? Probaly not. So, with $ tied up over the next few years Marco S., does it make sense to trade Phil K. to try to upgrade for this year? Not sure I have the answer, but, as we may not be able to afford him next year anyway, might be worth the risk.
Not sure I'd want to be in Peter's shoes right now.
Yeah man! Great idea!
Have an unproven goaltender (and no, having one shut out this season doesn't count as proven) back up an injury prone back up goaltender! BRILLIANT!
how about a trade kessel for vanik
I honestly think Pronger is a waste of good hard hard money... Yes he would be a nice addition but we could do way better things with 6 mil....
Thomas' record speaks for itself but you have to be prepared if he get's injured so Fernandez stays. No way Kessel goes and really why even consider change other than giving Hunwick a winger position. Problem solved...Stanley Cup next!
No way Buffalo trades Vanek for Kessel. If they would, I would drive Kessel to Buffalo myself.
Why would Buffalo give up Vanek for Kessel? It would take more like Kessel and two 1st round picks for Vanek. If we can get Cole for a pick and a prospect, id say do it. Derek Morris is def getting traded, so the Bruins might have interest...Oh, and Bob Ryan knows 0 about hockey, so his opinion doesnt count.
What about Recchi? I know he is 40 but he also provides veteran playoff experience, has some grit and can still score. He can also be had for just a pick and is a left handed shot. You would subtract nothing from the team and would still have enough cap space to add a veteran D-man (Morris?).
If PC were to move Kessel,it would be a big career risk for him.I think it would be crazy.25 goals in this NHL,at age 20 is huge. You must score to win.
There's a whole lotta "hockey experts" commenting here from the comfort of their desk jobs....or perhaps the comfort of their parents basement. None of you know what you're talking about, especially S(n)apperhead.
why does everyone say kessell hates boston. wheres that coming from?
Sounds like 9 out of 10 Bruins fans would trade their mother for a rent-a-player. These trade talks diminish the significance of bringing the Cup to Boston. It wouldn't be much better than buying a replica piece of tin. Where is the loyalty? Let this group of guys who has the team where it is now have their chance. Rent-a-players don't win Cups. What we need is the team to hit a hot streak at the right time. Look at how the Ducks (with less than the most talented team) won. They got real hot, and had unbelievable goal tending from Bryzgolov & Giguere.
Look how many kids are wearing Kessel jerseys - other than some of the blogging GMs, he is popular with the fans. And once he starts shopping he will realize there are fewer NHL cities that compare to Boston who will offer him dream money. Maybe if the NHL sent each team to each city every year he would be grateful not to be in Phx, FLA or elsewhere.
I say announce the team is not trading anyone from its roster before today's game. Fire up the team and put them on a hot streak. If they can add a veteran to help in the clubhouse by trading a pick or two, or a prospect, then that is different.
Lastly, Chris ASSbestos Pronger will bring cancer to the clubhouse and suck up so much money next year the blogging GMs will be regretting the trade. He also will not have an impact like people think. How much west coast hockey have you all been watching? He also lives in the comfort of one of the ritziest exclusive neighborhoods in a mansion, with his family settles, and by the way it was 75-80 he past 3 days here. I think he just got sized for new clubs yesterday.....
Go Bruins - the Bruins who got to this point and deserve the chance to give everything they have on a Cup run.
I'm really prayin no big deals are made... I like our team perfectly the way they are - though they could use a bit more timely scoring like we were getting at the beginning of the year - or not giving up tying goals. But I wouldn't mess with the chemistry.
Go Bruins! I gotta save for playoff tickets now.
I would take Recchi in a heartbeat...and Roberts... Those are the two players you bring in for rentals...Plus they wouldn't break the bank...Lots of character and experience... Dumb move on Pittsburgh last year to dump Mark... He and Crosby clicked well together... Go get em Chia!!! You'll be well rewarded and then some... Pay day is right around the corner..lol
I agree with SoCal. Let the team that got the Bruins this far take it the rest of the way -- the apparent chemistry among the guys and the way they typically bring out the best in one another are among the reasons the Bruins sit atop the East right now. Every elite team has a weakness and the "bottom dwellers" can arrive with an A+ game to take out the best (i.e. 8-6 routing of Calgary by Tampa Bay IN Calgary last week-end).
Don't worry about Manny. He's not injury-prone so much as the original injury wasn't handled correctly back in Minnesota. The surgery he finally had helped and the time he took to address his back problems that arose from trying to compensate for that injury should have put him back in shape. He just needs some playing time now to get his game back -- just like every other player seems to have needed to do.
Sapper, wow you and others have convinced me I need to make an apology:
Turk, you are not the dumbest poster on the Bruins blog, with the half dozen total asshats who have dribbled their stupid all over the comment threads lately I feel every confidence in saying you aren't even in the bottom ten.
If the Bruins can't find a left handed shot they should stay where they are...
A trade no one has brought up, and my reasons for it are:
1) Cap room
2) The possibility that PJ and Yelle will both not resign with Boston next year
3) One of the guys is a lefty
4) One of the guys is listed as a center but shows on their depth chart as a LW.
5) Each team would be giving two guys a (possibly needed) change of scenery.
Kessel and Noke to LA for O'Sullivan & Simonds.
The two from LA are under contract for the next two seasons at less than we'll have to pay Kessel alone next year. O'Sullivan plays significant PK minutes, Simonds is a rookie, and LA will have absurd amounts of cap space for next year. Much as i like Kessel's physical gifts... the media may be too much for him here, and Southern California is much more laid back for all sports except young celebrity rehab crawling...
