Matt Hunwick has been transported from Ristuccia Arena via ambulance to an undisclosed hospital. Claude Julien said Hunwick has been hospitalized because of a spleen ailment.

Hunwick arrived at the rink this morning for a team meeting. Hunwick looked fine when he walked into the rink. According to Julien, Hunwick started feeling ill after he arrived, prompting the training staff to call for an ambulance. Two fire trucks and two police cars also arrived at Ristuccia.

"He didn't feel very good, so our trainers did what was right and called an ambulance," Julien said. "Hopefully we can get some good news here as we move on."

According to Peter Fish, Hunwick's agent, the defenseman felt some pain in his stomach area yesterday. Fish asked Hunwick if he could recall a specific play in which he might have sustained an injury in Game 1. Hunwick said he couldn't think of a specific play.

"Maybe he can return at some point later on in the playoffs. But that's being very optimistic," Fish said. "It's very tough with the year they're having and the year he was having. They need him back there."

Julien said he didn't think Hunwick lost consciousness. Julien was not sure what hospital Hunwick had been taken to. Trainer Don DelNegro accompanied Hunwick.

"We're a close-knit team," said Julien. "Everybody feels for each other. When something like that happens, there's no doubt that our players certainly feel for him. We'll definitely worry like everybody else until we get some results. It's part of life. I know he's in good hands. Hopefully we'll get good news tonight."

The fast-moving emergency caught the team off guard. Some of the players had already left the rink after a team meeting.

"It's our job to make sure our team's focused," Julien said. "It's the responsibility of players. We're going to be OK. We're certainly not going to use that as an excuse. Hopefully before the game starts, everything will be under control and it will be us moving on, knowing that Matty is going to be fine and back with us as soon as he can."

The 23-year-old Hunwick appeared in Game 1 on Thursday. Hunwick was involved in a post-buzzer scrum with Mike Komisarek and emerged with scrapes around his right eye. Hunwick practiced yesterday and made it through the session without any limitations.

Shane Hnidy will replace Hunwick in the lineup tonight.

"He's a very capable and good defenseman for us," said Julien. "He's certainly going to go into the lineup tonight. That still give us our six D's."

  1. Hate to hear this. Hope he just had some bad chowda or something.

Great puck mover, I like seeing him on that PP unit and in the game in general.

    Get better Matt

  1. sorry on the spelling mistake, it's Hunwick.
    Get better.

  1. Matt, there are alot of Bruins fans here in Vegas that are hoping for a speedy recovery. Best wishes to Shane as we slowly push the dagger closer to the heart of the hated Canadiens.

  1. If it is his spleen, you won't be seeing him for a while. What about Komisarek? The last time I saw a good eye gouge was Big Time Wrestling. How long will it take for him to pay?

  1. As a Habs fans, best wishes and speedy recovery. You never want to see anyone fall ill, regardless of who they play for.

  1. Get better soon, Matt!
The way some of us fans have been reacting (here AND on the Montreal boards) you'd think we have the spleen ailments.

    Bring it on!

  1. History repeats itself for me :). My team the Avs in 2000-2001, #1 seed in the West, and Forsberg ruptured his spleen and obviously the rest is history. Lets hope the bruins do the same!

  1. This may be related to what Komy did Thursday night. If a blood vessel broke around the eye, he may have had internal bleeding.

The Bruins in order to not infuriate their team from retaliating and playing the usual dumb hockey, may be wanting to keep this hush hush for now.

A good old face wash is nothing to get mad about, especially since Lucic is the league leader in that department. Personally, I'd like the Habs to go after Lucic, Savard and Chara, but it will be too difficult to get Chara because you're not allowed to bring a ladder on the ice.

ALL THAT BEING SAID, I will definitely pray for Hunwick to get better. We want to see controlled violence where getting hurt means you miss the series, not dying.

Here's to the spirit of Sprague Cleghorn, Habs all time best Defenseman. Cheers.

  1. Damn, I hope he gets better soon. He's blossoming into a nice defender and obviously a crucial part of our PP1 line.

  1. spleen ailment means he took a hit and it's either enlarged or ruptured. they usually take it out. happens all the time in sports. probly done for the playoffs, glad we got depth. get well soon to hunwick, and lets hope the boys get a pound of flesh for him.

Posted by chip April 18, 09 01:09 PM
  1. Hey James Reed. Komy would be the first guy that would feel bad about what happened to Hunwick. Hopefully it is just the spleen and nothing more serious. There are a lot worse things that happen during a game than what Komy did.

Hope that Hunwick gets better and this has nothing to do with the eye gouging.

This is serious stuff for a player to go into hospital. I personally did not see Hunwick get hurt during the game. The hardest hit was the one where Lucic went flying into the boards when Hamrlik tripped him. I am surprised he got up from that.

  1. Even if it is from a hit why would we want to get a pound of flesh?? Are we going to stop hitting in a game now. It's part of the game. I wish Hunwick well and I am sure he isn't crying over it.

  1. We want to see Hunwick back asap but I have to admit, I love the toughness and the edge Hnidy brings to the lineup. Puzzled why he has not seen much playing time over the last little while! Has it ever been explained by the team?

  1. get well kid we need u in the lineup

    Posted by djdj22 April 18, 09 02:29 PM
  1. Hnidy doesn't dress as often because he's slower and a bit weaker than the rest of B's defensemen. It really is that simple.

  1. OrrCoutry: Fair enough.

  1. No matter how much I hate the Bruins, I hate injuries such as Hunwicks a lot more. Here's hoping for a speedy recovery Bud. I am sure almost all Habs fans feel the same. Anyway, Why does Chara run up and start pounding on Komisarek when Komi is already engaged in a scrum but will not go with Laraque? I see why your colors are "yellow" and gold. And why was Thomas complaining about the lights in MSG? It's not like there is many Stanley cup banners to block the light. Let's see again, we have won 24 out of 32 engagements in the playoffs. So if you win this series you'll only have to do it 15 more times to beat us. Have fun cubs.

  1. Very tough break for Hunwick, puts life and sport into perspective. Luckily he was surrounded by people who could help when we fell ill.

I am with RHO, like what Hnidy brings to the table. And OrrCountry, Hnidy may be slower than the new era waterbugs who play D, but weaker? When Hnidy goes to the corner or behind the net, you don't see the opponent carrying the puck along the boards. it is usually one man "stapled" to the boards and a lose puck to be grabbed by another Bruin. All round, brings more than Montador. Hnidy was in the line up every game when the Bs were posting back-to-back months like 10-1-1. In the playoffs D from the D is more important than the additional scoring chances created by waterbugsIt is one team, and the CUp requires depth so let's hope Hnidy plays strong and Hunwicxk gets healthy.

  1. Thoughts and prayers are with you and your family, Matt.

Man--KG out for the Celts, Danny's heart attack, the Celts dropping game 1 today...and now this? Some weird stuff happening in and around the Garden. Keep your heads up, Bruins, work hard, and good luck!!!

  1. //Why does Chara run up and start pounding on Komisarek when Komi is already engaged in a scrum but will not go with Laraque?//

BECAUSE KOMISAREK THREW A CHEAP SHOT ON KREJCI, THAT'S WHY!

My God, are Habs fans terminally stupid? How many times does this have to be pointed out?

Laraque, God bless his goony heart, at the very least doesn't cheap shot guys who are 50 pounds lighter than he is.

Hope Hunny gets well soon, poor guy.

  1. I would say ,based on his quote from the paper, Komisarek will be marked. Hunwick called it a face rub, painful enough with a gloved hand but with the glove off , Hunwick's face(on TV) looked like he got hit with a rock. Seems like the Habs are making sure that if the Bruins emerge from this series, they will be too beat up to continue effectively. Why else run the scorer after he has scored? The play is over

Posted by james Reed April 18, 09 04:34 PM
  1. Bruins Fans please stop whining about hitting and facewashes and blah blah blah....... the way to hurt the Canadians is to win the game, and we did. Now lets do it again tonight and take satisfaction in the fact that we are going to win the series. Seriously, this crying is starting to make me sick . Good health Matt, get well soon......

Posted by Joe April 18, 09 05:09 PM
  1. Get well Matt. He is a very underrated player for the B's and I am really hoping that it is not his spleen.

Check out the B's record with and without him

The Bruins record without Hunwick is 13-10-3, pretty average.
Their record with Hunwick in the lineup is 39-8-7(this includes Thursday night's 4-2 playoff victory over Montreal!!!!! )

He brings a lot to the lineup that other defensemen, including Hnidy, don't bring. Unfortunately this probably also means more time for Montador. He is best used in small doses....the smaller the better.

  1. classy kid...took a cheap shot, but never complained.

Posted by lougorman April 18, 09 06:01 PM
  1. This guy is the strongest skater on defense. We need is steady play and ability to him to punish the offensive stars on the other teams throughout the playoffs. Let's hope some "Milk of Magnesia" makes him right!

Still, if the B's have to go without him they can't be retaliating and taking bad penalties. There is plenty of opportunities to crush the Canadiens with good checks while playing within the rules. Focus, Focus, Focus!

  1. REPLY TO JAMES (SEE COMMENT NUMBER 7): HUNWICK IS BEING QUOTED AS SAYING: "He was facewashing me and I was facewashing him, so I'm not in a position to be making accusations".... Are you going to make the same comment about Hunwick paying for his eye gouging????

(courtesy post # 24 - BEAR-HUNTER:) There we have it, folks! Another classic Hab drone dining on their PAST, AGAIN!! They don't know how to live in the PRESENT! Their reality is not TONIGHT or THIS SERIES! It's what's happened YEARS AGO! Sad!
