Honor for Chiarelli

Posted by Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff May 20, 2009 12:51 PM

Sporting News, via a 39-member panel of executives and coaches, has named Peter Chiarelli the NHL's Executive of the Year. Yesterday, Sporting News tabbed Claude Julien as Coach of the Year.

Last summer, Chiarelli signed Michael Ryder to a three-year, $12 million contract. At the trade deadline, he acquired Mark Recchi and Steve Montador. Chiarelli's team-building vision of a character-filled roster with a high compete level started to take shape last season, then blossomed in 2008-09, with the Bruins finishing atop the Eastern Conference.

  1. Great job PC and JC! Going from 13th to 8th to 1st in 3 seasons is not nearly as easy as the Bruins made it look. This off-season looks like it's going to be just as demanding staying under the cap, not to mention possibly starting the year without Kessel & Krejci (assuming we can sign both of them). Good luck and thanks for a great year!

  1. I guess Montador was a good pickup based ONLY on the fact that Ference and Hunwick ended up going down with injuries. Montador otherwise had me swearing a lot at the TV.

  1. Great work rebuilding the B's in 2 seasons. GM Peter C. made some flops (Schaefer, Fernandez) but learns from mistakes. Coach Julien, keep on track, we'll get the Cup back soon! Thanks for a great year of hockey.

  1. And don't forget to add Dave Lewis as a flop. That's where any true Bruin fan had to have gained a lot of respect for PC when he canned Lewis after one year and hired Claude, basically admitting to a huge mistake, but swallowing his pride, and turned this franchise around.

  1. Fernandez was not a flop. He was a fine choice and was derailed by injuries. Before Julien's excellent defensive scheme was implemented, the B's were shopping for a real #1 NHL goalie, and Fernandez was the guy at the time. I consider Lewis to be PCs one big Boo-Boo. Great job overall.

  1. Congrats PC, and yes from 13th to 1st in a short span is quite the accomplishment.

But I don't think the Montador trade contributed at all. Yes, it was good to have him given two Dmen went down with injuries, but I still think the Bs are in this round if Hnidy was played over Montador. Tthe Bs win the game Monty got the assist on Staal's goal, and the win in game 6 ends the series.

I hope Hnidy stays in town. Given who needs to be signed that will require most of the $, $800,00/year for Hnidy to play Stuart/Hnidy on third line (the third line most of the season) is a solid pairing. If the Bs want a 1st or 2nd quality Dman for third line with Stuart, it will cost too much.

  1. Some of you should try deliberate amnesia, it's worked well for me.
    Dave Lewis who?

Congratulations to Chiarelli though, hopefully he will turn this into a nice extension with the Bruins, rather than a fat contract with another team.

  1. Great job? He signed a close to 35+ yr. old goalie for several years @ $5MM per year. Now he is going to have to lose Kessel or Krejci. He could have kept them both by letting Timmy go and letting Rask take over full time. What a bluder which will handcuff this team next year.

  1. Your an idiot, Rask is at least two to three years away and thats if he can ever become a #1, stop buying into the hype. Great job PC and coach J

  1. Rask full time? You must be joking. Then you'd be on here next year saying what a mistake it was to let Timmy go. We can't lose both goalies in the same year and expect to get back to #1. I like letting Rask backup Thomas and eventually take over.

I trust that PC can get the deals done that need to get done, even if that means trading some heavy salary players. I think Krejci is the top priority and Kessel if the numbers fit. I just hope the salary cap remains where it is and doesn't come down like they're projecting.

  1. Aren't we still paying Peter Schaefer too? Will Jacobs eat his full salary having him play for Providence another year?
