Surgery for Kessel

Posted by Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff May 18, 2009 10:14 AM

Phil Kessel will undergo shoulder surgery on Thursday to repair a torn rotator cuff and labrum.

The 21-year-old led the Bruins with 36 goals during the regular season, and his 60 points rated third on the team. He played in 70 games in the regular season, missing time in January with mononucleosis.

In the playoffs, Kessel, who is slated to become a restricted free agent July 1, had six goals and five assists in 11 games, finishing with a plus-7 rating.

  1. Best wishes to the kid. No wonder he looked banged up in the last game.

  1. That explains some things...shot never had the same zip...

  1. huh.... so I guess even Phill Kessel's a tough guy, huh ?

I saw him falling during the first Carolina game and he looked in real pain and since hasn't done much.

    might explain it.

What a great season the B's have had, though.

  1. But, but... I though Kessel was a wuss!

    (Yes, that's sarcasm)

  1. 11 points in 11 games and a +7 is pretty good as far as I'm concerned.....any blame for this series goes to Chiarrelli and Julien. Bringing in Montador when they needed a real Dman was inexcusable. Montador cost them Game 3 and Game 7 with dumb decisions...Julien's fixation with Bergeron on the PP was blockheaded move as well. I'd like to see +/- numbers for the Carolina series because everybody's number are skewed from the Montreal win

  1. Those are impressive numbers for a player with a torn rotator cuff and labrum. I guess Phil is tougher than people realized, including me.

  1. Well this might explain about why he was invisible in game 7...but still we need these things out there so a call up can be made earlier...I understand hiding injuries so the other team still has to plan but he's not going to be effective out there with this type of injury and hurts the team and his linemates.

  1. That would explain his aversion to hitting and weak shot.

  1. I hope the surgery is successfull for him. One of my favorite Bruins! Hope they sign this kid for the future, we need him!

  1. Nash, +/- isn't going to tell you anything from the Carolina series. I put more weight in your opinion from watching all the games than what those #s will show. Look at Montador - he had some +s on goals when the 3 forwards got a cycle going or forecheck and scored, with D pair doing nothing/close to nothing. His + reflects a lot of luck.

That stat drives me crazy. Look at Hnidy - ended season +6. But if you take off two games of the season he was like +11 or more. I think he was victimized by Manny with a -4 (maybe just a -3) in that game Manny scored on himself and was forever banished by Boston sports fans, and a -2 or so in the meaningless game at end of season vs Buffalo -again with Manny in goal.

Does anyone honestly think Montador was a +15 with Ducks before the trade?

  1. For God's sake, nash, give it a rest.

Bergeron is one of the best players on this team, and apparently one of the few who was healthy.

And Montador didn't "cost them the series." That's a ridiculous statement, even for you. Inexperience and injuries played a much bigger role.

Please do us all a favor and take advantage of the offseason by either growing a brain or making yourself scarce
