Video: Reaction roundup
Globe hockey writers provide insight and analysis following the Carolina Hurricanes' 3-0 triumph over the Boston Bruins in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals Sunday at TD Banknorth Garden.
Shinzawa: Bruins careless with puck
Dupont: Carolina upped compete level
Shaughnessy: Even headed to Raleigh

Sin bin: Ference. Picked the wrong day to have the worst game of his season. Even Brick knew it, you could hear it in his voice after Ference let that puck slip over the blue line.
no problem, reality check! we were the dominate team on the ice but we lost a little patience with the puck, especially on the power play..without a doubt ward was the diiference..weren't as aggresive which didn't lead to the turnovers like game one..
ference sorry to say was in left field most of the nite..sorry to say..nothing against ference but would much rather the sheriff hnidy back there to shore up all the loose ends..play practically the same way in game 3 and we'll skate away with 4 or 5 goals..let's go bruins..
The Bruins can't play a soft, finesse game just because the Canes do. They have to bring the muscle in the form of forechecks and suffocating defense. I would love to see Lucic come out flying in game 3. He needs to summon the fire he displayed back in Vancouver during "the shift" and frighten some people out there.
The Bruins played like it was the Canadiens out there last night. The Hurricanes proved they are no cream-puff Montreal Canadiens. That was a rock solid defensive effort. Bruins woke from their hibernation in the 3rd period was a one positive.
Ok, here's MY reaction:
1st rant: not the greatest class of people in the building last night. Now that it's the playoffs, the bosses have apparently stopped giving their tickets to employees, and are coming themselves - meaning a building full of guys with their collars up, sunglasses on their heads, and a rolex on each wrist -- each one more important than every other one -- making for some ridiculous BMOC v. BMOC confrontations.
An unbelievable amount of rude and unacceptably arrogant behavior last night from people we've haven't seen in the building all year. None involving us directly, fortunately - but we were watching.
Guys - get over yourselves. Better yet: give your tickets back to the people that work for you, who have been going all year, know the team, and who don't act like jacka$$es in front of ladies and children. If you're that important, you should be in a suite being rude to the waitstaff, not down with the people actually watching hockey.
2nd rant: To the two knuckleheads in section 1 with the aluminum-foil Stanley Cup: Get lost. Why don't you just curse a knife and stick in through the karma of this team? Were you two numb-nuts Versus plants or what? Shove that thing up your Versus.
3rd rant: to the vast amount of newbies in the building: welcome aboard, but do us a couple of favors? Make an effort to know at least some of the names of the Bruins, and which one is on the ice when you're yelling? It's embarrassing to hear Bruins fans yelling "GO BERGERON, GO!!!!" when he's on the bench. For future reference, he wears #37.
And what's up with being rude and obnoxious to the security and garden staff? News flash for you: those people work all year, every game, and almost all of them are very, very nice people, just trying to keep the drunks in order. There was very little trouble all year, and all of a sudden last night, a building full of people giving the staff a hard time. Guess what: it wasn't them, it was YOU.
Last news flash: if you're in section 12, your friend "LISA!!!!!!!!" is not going to hear you in the balcony on the other side of the building - and if she did, she'd pretend she didn't, because you're an embarrassment - so please sit down and shut up.
Ok, that's it. Sorry.
Man, what a crew in the building last night. Please -- someone send the regular-season fans back.
I think Fluto's got it dead on. Talking about "compete level" seems like a cop-out to me -- let's talk about the specifics. We had a ton turnovers and picked passes last night. Long passes, short passes, hard passes, soft passes -- it didn't matter how we tried to get the puck from one guy to another, they seemed to find a way to grab it en route. And it wasn't just in the neutral zone, either. It was in all three zones.
Medford Mickey, your my kind of fan....Old time hockey ....Eddie Shore, Eddie Shore.
I would love to attend a Playoff game but I refuse to pay a Monthly car payment just so my son and I can see 1 game.
Mickey, where would we be without you today? It was just as tough watching (or hearing) the booing from my living room last night. Not the best game by the B's, and it was clearly a group of people who haven't been to many games this year. Its tough when you spend all your $$$ on regular season games and don't have much left for the post season, and then see all these toolbags there who aren't embarrassing themselves, they are embarrassing every REAL Bruins fan out there in the crowd, at home, or in a bar somewhere. It just makes us look rediculous. None of them care about the team, they're just there to be seen.
It's like that line from the movie Crash when the guy kicks Ludacris out of his car: "Look at me. You embarrass me. You embarrass yourself."
Following Medford Mickey's comments -- was it just me, or did the crowd boo the Bruins a few times? That's embarrassing. I laughed at Montreal a couple weeks ago when they heckled their own team, because to me, one of the basic rules is that you always stand by your team while they're playing. I don't like eating my own words. They're not tasty.
Guys,
I feel your pain. As a loyal Habs fan who still hasn't come to grips with the idiotic behaviour of a few hundred louts in our own building 2 weeks ago, I sympathize with you. The Bruins lost last night for the first time in a dog's age, and, especially after their effort in the 3rd, probably didn't deserve to be booed by their own faithful (a minority I'm sure). But that's the nature of the business. I don't like it, but I also have to accept it as fact. With success comes rising expectations. Will the B's come back and win the series? In my opinion, I think so. But it certainly won't be as easy as it was against the Habs. The Canes may not be the most talented team, but they are the most opportunistic team left in the playoffs. That's how they won the Cup in '06. Take a couple of penalties, give away a couple of passes, and boom, it's in the back of the net. Then sit back and rely on Ward (who is playing his way onto the Canadian Olympic team).
That said, the Bruins are a great road team. Julien is as well prepared as they come. The RBC Centre will be rocking, and the Canes will likely get a lift from the crowd, but if the B's can withstand the initial onslaught a la Round 1 in Montreal, they should grind the Canes into the ground. The only caveat is that the Canes are deeper and more unified than the Habs, so no doubt, it won't be easy.
I also think Lucic, Recchi and Ryder need to show a bit more jump, to get the Canes D on their heels again. And Thomas needs better rebound control.
Finally, this series at the outset was all about Staal vs. Chara and Ward vs. Thomas. The first 2 games have proven that.
Hey Mickey,
I totally hear you! The mood at the building was foul from the get go. I felt a bad vibe all night and was hoping for a goal in the 1st period to turn it around but alas it never came. I work the 50/50 Raffle and our computer gave us nothing but trouble all night long. People generally are cool about it and we direct them to other tables but some people actually got testy and rude with us. We saw one guy got really mouthy with a Boston Police officer over a spilt beer. Shenanigans abounds.
I tried not to let the mood affect me but it was hard. the booing at the end really sent me into a downward spiral. Let’s hope the electricity comes back for game 5!!!
I apologize for the rant. I was hung-over.
Just a different crowd there last night. Not a pleasant one. A whole new supposedly higher class of people, and the behavior gets worse - go figure.
For them, I'll add a rant: stop screaming "HIT HIM!!! HIT HIM!!! HIT SOMEONE!!!! CHARA!!! HIT SOMEONE, CHARA!!!! HIIIIIIIIIT HIIIIIIIIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!" when the Canes are carrying the puck into the Bruins' end. The Bruins play puck-containment, which works pretty damn well, and they don't get defensively out of position to flatten someone - ever. That's how they ended up first in the eastern conference.
And btw, they outhit the Canes last night.
Krispy, we saw a woman walk down the aisle to the glass to take pictures during play and then just stay standing there, watching the game; the security guard came down and very nicely asked her to go back to her seat -- and she started mouthing off to the guard, like "don't you tell me where I can and can't stand," etc., and kept it up all the way back to her seat. It was like that all night.
"For them, I'll add a rant: stop screaming "HIT HIM!!! HIT HIM!!! HIT SOMEONE!!!! CHARA!!! HIT SOMEONE, CHARA!!!! HIIIIIIIIIT HIIIIIIIIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!""
Almost as bad as "fans" yelling "SHOOOOOT!!!" on the power play when the puck is at the point and there are two people in front of the D-man ready to block the shot...it's too bad they don't have some sort of fan litmus test in order to purchase playoff tix...
Josh, that's he other one. "SHOOOOOOOOT!!!!!'
Like you can shoot the puck past an NHL goalie while he's in position, has a clear look, and two guys blocking in front of him. Good luck with that.
See now, she should have been booted out right then and there. The ushers don't have to take that.
Another V8 moment for me is the amount of people schmoozing on the concourse or getting food/beer while play is going on. These people have paid a lot of money for their seats and aren't even watching the game!
Fortunately when we end the raffle we all go to level 9 where things are a bit more subdued....well apart from me. I get very vocal when they play sloppy but I'm not a boo bird. I tend to make the people around me laugh. Funny how that works. I'm angry and they think it's a comedy routine. ;)
I was disappointed in the intensity of the crowd last night and last night made me realize how spoiled us Boston fans are, booing the team because they lose one game? Pathetic, are we as low as Montreal fans, that really got me pissed last night. No team has ever gone 16-0 to win the cup, why do we expect the Bruins will do that? Game 5 should be a whole new ball game, being a season ticket holder it kind of sucks to see a lot of new faces around you each game and a lot of people just sitting around watching. Get up, make some noise, the B's need us behind them as the 7th man. One part I love about my section up in the balcony is the last 3-4 rows around us stand the entire game, the few that are season ticket holders know what to do.
Yes the game was flat and the crowd was flat. Bad vibe at the Garden last night, I agree with the intensity of the crowd not being there I feel like other places seem a lot louder maybe it was sunday. I like going to games and cheering when I want to or deem neccessary its tough when no one else is though. But I don't feel like my fanhood should be questioned becasue my playoff beard isnt long enough, so I don't agree with someone directing their anger to the people in the crowd, for not being involved rule #6 Draw attention to yourself never in a negative way but positive way and on your own terms.
Hopefully Sunday won't need to be an excuse for game 5, I want the Garden to be an intimidating force for away teams, I've done my best now I urge others to join in for those that are going to Game 5 and future games.
Way to go Mickey!
With all the rude snotty people, I felt like I was at a red sox or celtics game last night. What a mess! The Bruins need to figure this out and get the real fans in the Garden for the playoffs. People are jerks, every time somebody stood up to cheer, the guy 3 row back yelled at him to sit down. Watch the Carolina crowd wednesday, they will have a blast.
I was really pisssed when the booing started also!
Hahah Mickey - my favorite thing to do is scream, "SHOOOOOT!" during TV timeouts or when either team is regrouping behind the net in their own zone. It makes just as much sense to yell it then as it does when we're in any kind of scoring position. I can't stand people screaming it during a power play so I enjoy mocking them.
I feel you on the "Let the real fans come back" too. I was at plenty of games this year but can't score a playoff ticket to save my life. I prefer to go with a couple friends and there's no way I can get 4 seats together it seems, it's very disappointing. I'll have to save up and hope for a 3rd round at this point.
Oh and lastly... what about all the people walking up the aisle's while play is on? There are signs everywhere that ask you to politely wait until play has stopped before leaving or returning to your seats... inconsiderate clowns.
// a building full of guys with their collars up, sunglasses on their heads, and a rolex on each wrist -- each one more important than every other one //
HOLY COW! This is such an eerily accurate description of that "corporate" crowd I spoke of a few weeks back that has infiltrated the Air Canada Centre at Leaf games. These people give you dirty looks for being a boisterous fan , not an obnoxious one, in between frequent conversations on their cells, of course.
bluefox the great part about the balcony is us being in the back, we never sit down the entire game
i will be there sunday, i will be making as much noise as possible, everyone should join in, i want jack edwards to say this building is vibrating again
2008 game 6 vs montreal noise level please?
