Audio: Chiarelli on free agency
Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli held a conference call with the media this afternoon to discuss free agency, which begins tomorrow at noon. Check out some of the audio highlights below...
Globe hockey writers will have more in a bit, but few quick notes:
- Forward Peter Schaefer cleared waivers and the team has until 5 p.m. today to buy him out. That move would save the team $566,000 on the cap, according to Chiarelli, who said the team hadn't made a decision whether to release Schaefer as of the 2 p.m. call.
- Restricted free agents Matt Hunwick and Byron Bitz both have arbitration rights and can exercise them any time before July 5.
- Asked, in a hypothetical world, what he would pursue if the cap allowed it, Chiarelli noted he'd like an impact defenseman (a 1 or a 2, who could log minutes to ease the load on Zdeno Chara) and size up front.

we believe in you peter chiarelli start working on phil kessel we need him !!!
wideman was supposed to be that 2nd d-man . we gave boyes for nothing.
and they will give kess for nothing too kaberle is far from an impact player.
chara norris winner but expected him to be dominant in playoffs and he was not. thomas not worth 5m no one else would have given it to him even with vezina.
kess worth 5m and bergie not worth 4,75m. bergie was always even before concussion a 2nd liner at best.
kess is a definite 1st liner.
ryder will go downhill starting next yr
