Bruins buy out Schaefer
The Bruins have bought out the final year of Peter Schaefer's contract. The Bruins will carry $566,667 toward their cap number in 2009-10 and 2010-11.
Schaefer, acquired from Ottawa for Shean Donovan on July 17, 2007, spent last season in Providence. Schaefer scored seven goals and 19 assists in 47 games.

This sucks. What is this all about?
What is this all about?
It's about this guy being god-awful, even in Providence.
Fluto, why is it $566,667 and not $700,000? I thought he had $2.1 million left on his deal and I thought it was broken into thirds?
Good move; he contributed nothing. I watched him play all season in Providence and he was very non productive.
He has $2.3MM remaining on his deal, therefore the cap hit should be $767K for each year.
He must have been a real sour puss down in Providence. Maybe he played that poorly so this would happen? Does Charelli still owe him money? Is he likely to get an NHL contract this season?? I'm serious. He cost the bruins a 1/2 milion the next 2 years and it doesn't even go in his pocket???? What a jerk.
Bobby Orr wore #27 when he came to the B's....
This reeks of Jacobs. I understand not wanting to pay $2+ million to a guy in the minors who doesn't try, but at the cost of hurting your cap situation even more?! If you want a competitive team you can't have cap hits for players you don't have! Moneybags Jacobs strikes again. Please sell the team, you're impacting their ability to compete.
One of the two poor trades Chiarelli has made (the other being the Versteeg for Bochenski). Donovan was no loss but Schaefer turned out to be a dog ( and a good salary dump for Ottawa).
Will, wow stop complaining about Jacobs, this team is spending up to the cap, what more do you want from him, Chiarelli runs this team anyways.
@ Mike:
Most team DO spend to the cap, but buying out Schaefer hurts our cap situation for TWO YEARS at the trade-off of allowing Jacobs to save $767K that he won't have to pay to Schaefer next year. That's a pretty petty and miniscule amount considering the scope of an NHL team's cash flow.
You have to let deadwood like Schaefer go to make room in Providence for younger players. He had to go.
@Fred from Brookline: Thanks for backup.
@Mike They're not maximizing the potential to utilize cap space by buying out contracts to save 700k. That 700k sure might help down the line when we need to offer a big more to retain Lucic next year. Or any other RFA or UFA for that matter. But now we have another lump of dead weight in our cap space. If a team is a contender, you can't go ruining their ability to get necessary pieces because you're cheap. Chiarelli would not have done this buyout and hurt his negotiating power unless the ownership came down on him and pressured. He is smarter than that.
