Bruins weighing offer for Kaberle?

Posted by Kevin Paul Dupont, Globe Staff June 25, 2009 08:27 PM

MONTREAL -- The Leafs this afternoon received at least one solid offer for veteran defenseman Tomas Kaberle, and according to a source familiar with added offers that Toronto is fielding this evening, the Bruins could be among the suitors.

Kaberle, 31, in April completed his 10th season with the Leafs, after being selected 204th overall in the '96 draft.

According to a report late yesterday afternoon on TSN.ca., the Leafs received an offer of a roster player and a draft pick for the Czech-born blueliner.

The Bruins were rumored to be among the bidders for Kaberle's services at the March 4 trade deadline. But Leafs GM Brian Burke, noting then that Kaberle had a no-trade contract, did not force a move. Kaberle's contract, though, allows for him to be traded during a specified time in the off-season, provided it follows a season in which the Leafs have not made the playoffs.

Kaberle, a left-handed shot who would slot into second defensive pairing and also play the power play, has two years remaining on his contract at $4.25 million per season.

Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli did not return an email which asked if the Bruins were in the hunt for Kaberle.

We will keep you posted here on Boston.com.

  1. With all the rumours and speculation, this feels just like the run-up to the trade deadline. And the results are going to be the same for the B's: maybe a couple of minor moves, but nothing that significantly alters the team.

  1. Come on KPD ! Do you really think the Bruins will handicap themselves even more on the cap. It will not happen, I would bet my house on it.
Leafs want someone in return in the likes of Savard and Lucic, a two for one with at least one of our young studs.
Kaberle is a no show for at least 35% of his games. Ask any Leaf fan or anybody that follows the Leafs.
I can picture it in Boston and all of you just freaking out on the boards and blogs to get him out of town ! At the sametime crying for whom we lost in the trade.
    NO WAY !!!!
KEEP IT AS A RUMOR OR GOSSIP.

  1. TSN.ca mine as well just cover the leafs and habs. Always trying to keep canadien hockey fans dreaming of the leafs getting to and maintaining some type of sustained glory there entitled too.

If and when Kaberle goes it will be to a team that can afford him and it will be no where near the northeast. PC will make some moves but it certainly not be to swap out contracts for an overpaid underacheiving Defensemen. Poor Leaf fans having to put up with baseless rumors.

  1. B's legion...

Kaberle is a steal at $4.25
You can bet that the Leafs will have money coming back the other way, probably Kessel who is holding out for 5-6 mill.

This deal makes PLENTY of sense for the Bruins. Plus Kabby's contract expires at a perfect time where new contracts will need to be handed out to the young guys

Bruins HAVE to win now and Kaberle gives them a better chance

  1. The Bruins need to upgrade their defense. This wouldn't be too bad a move but they will still have Wideman and Chara...the two slowest guys in the NHL. They need to lose Ward also.....Kessel for Kaberle does nothing for their cap space and gives them seven or eight defensemen

  1. Kaberle is a top powerplay defenceman. Defensively he is average. The contract he has is well below market, and for teams that miss out on Bouwmeester they are expected to try to get him. He is a bargain at his contract - compare to Chicago and what they had to pay for Campbell who is a similar type defenseman.

  1. The deal, as reported on TSN, is Kessel for kaberle and the 7th overall pick. If Chiarelli pulls that off, you Bruins' fans should be erecting a statue outside the "whatever we're calling the old Garden this week" arena .

  1. sounds like a dela to me, problem is Kessel is not the type of player Burke likes. Too one dimensional, if that 7th overall pick becomes a solid 2nd liner or solid number 3-4 defenseman, this deal is worth it, and Kessels 36 goals will be replaced by Sturms 30 and Kaberles 10 lol

  1. The LEAFS want Kessel and they give us a 7th rounder and Kaberle also you all must be in la la land ! They want more and we will regret this trade !
    On another subject.
Now, Kaberle is making 4.25mill , this means Kessel wants more than 4.5 ???
he wants 5mill ? Anywhere over 5mill I might have to disagree for Kessel. The cap next year will go down from what the experts are saying and that might handicap us next year for signing the likes of Lucic, and others.
