Details of failed Kessel deal
The Bruins arrived at the NHL draft Friday night poised to deal Phil Kessel to the Maple Leafs for veteran defenseman Tomas Kaberle, according to sources with first-hand knowledge of the negotiations that took place over the course of two days last week.
The Bruins believed they were sending Kessel, destined to become a restricted free agent on Wednesday, and Boston's first-round pick in the June 2010 draft for Kaberle and Toronto's first pick, No. 7 overall, in this year's draft.
Boston GM Peter Chiarelli learned early Friday evening, some 2 1/2 hours prior to the start of the draft, that Toronto GM Brian Burke never intended to include the No. 7 pick. The proposed deal ended there, with the Bruins unwilling to give up Kessel and their first-rounder next June for Kaberle alone.

Thank god this didn't happen.
Ummm...how is this any different than anything else that's been out there? Where are the details?
Chia was right to not make that deal. You don't trade a 36 goal scorer for an over 30 defenseman with a 4.25 million cap hit who is only marginally better than guys you already have without getting that pick.
Toronto was only going to give up the 7 if it allowed them to get up and pick Tavares.
Chia was probably questioning Burke's sanity when talks began.
Burk is a big ---hole period. He knew exactly what was offered, but he has a history of screwing around with other GM's. But he is still better than Kevin Lowe who broke the unwritten code and starting signing RFA thus handcuffing the other teams. Guess who will be first in the Kessel sweepstakes, that turd Lowe will be high on the list.
Did Burke never intend to include it or did he think he wasn't expected to include it? Any word on how this miscommunication came about?
I don't understand how moving Kessel for Kaberle (regardless of the draft picks) would have done anything to ease the cap pressure on the B's, nor can I see how the deal would have made the Bruins a better team, especially given Kessel's potential upside and the age difference between the two players. Can anyone explain this?
never do business burke.he will hose you.best to avoid him.good riddance the nucks got rid of him.he's no genius.why do peopel think he is?kessel is good.he's a keeper/just pay him the money.
Assuming that Kessel isn't dealt away in the coming weeks, one wonders what damage has been done to the potential for dealing constructively with RFA Phil.
why can't they just go Kessel for Kaberle? Seems like a decent trade to me
Our genius GM should NOT trade Kessel.
This easily has to be one of the Best Trades the Bruins never made in the history of the organization.
and now what ??? if this is official as it gets this leak will kill any chance of the Bruin re-signing him. I guess we'll see him thrive in another city.
Hey, I'm not blaming Chiarelli, maybe Kessel and his agent just demanded too much.
Cap unfair when it comes to our own product that we drafted and developed.
Who are the "first-hand" sources? KPD, give it a rest on Kessel already and these anonymous sources or at least cite your information. You are not Bob Woodward. You are going to drive Phil out of town.
Smart move.
good thing occonell isn't the gm anymore, he would have said what the hell and made the trade anyways
brian burke must think the bruins are stupid, no? hahaha
i'm not overly happy about them trying to trade Kessel. i'm not a huge fan of him as i think he takes some games off and isn't very physical but he is a scorer and we went from a team who scored very little goals to a very good scoring team. unless Chiarelli has someone definite in mind that can replace him then we have to find a way to sign him even if it means losing Axellson and someone else to FA. not sure we'd have this problem if Thomas wasn't given the deal he got. i am a fan of his and i realize he won the Vezina but he wouldn't have if Brodeur was healthy all season. I just think our D is strong enough that we could get by with Rask as the full time goalie.
is burk a dum ass\
kessel and a pick for kaberle
kessel/21 and a pick for kaberle/31
This makes me wonder if the Bruin's have gotten any smarter under Chiarelli. Did they really think that they would essentially receive a move to the 7th pick for the rights to match Kessel and then get Kaberle as well? This would have only made sense if Kaberle were considered major salary cap deadwood. Not likely given he's been an allstar the past 3 years!
It does seem to be a lofty price to give up. Phil is one of my favorite Bruins. I believe the sky's the limit for him. While I agree the Bruins can use some Point help for Chara & Wideman, especially on PP, I think the price is steep for Kaberle!
The deal would make more sense if Boston was able to move up in the draft, although I feel they may be better off moving Ryder or Bergeron in the long run!!!
Haha...nice try Boston. You get a top-10 pick this year and the Leafs can get what will likely be at least the 25th overall pick or later next season. Didn't hurt to try I guess.
i'm sick and tired of KESSEL being shopped as the BRUINS biggest trade bait every day of this kids run as a Bruin. I understand the cap, but losing this kid will haunt the BRUINS for many years to come. this kid is only going to get bett. he is not even 22 yet. get him signed, and let him grow. i wounder if he even still wants to be a BRUIN since he is in every trade rumor for the last 3 years? Kess there are BRUINS FANS who realize your pontenial and value to the team, and want you to stay a BRUIN!!!
same old bumbling, Bruins.
WHOA! Talk about a miscommunication! To be honest, I'm glad the deal fell through! Kessel for Kaberle? Even with the apparent swapping of first-round picks I still don't see the deal being in our favour. (Also not wild about a division rival getting a guy who could come back and hurt the team.) I have a new respect for him playing through an injury in the playoffs that would have laid him up if during the regular season. Kessel, not hindered by injuries, knows how to score and if, in the not too distant future, our club is to go deep in the playoffs, we are going to need him or a player like him to score maybe 9, 10, 12 goals to help the cause. Hey, there may not be enough money to sign him anyway. Here's hoping PC finds a way.
Brian Burke probably tried to pull a fast one, that's the type of person he is. He will do and say anything as long as it is to his benefit, Brian Burke screwed over Peter Zezel heartlessly during his dictation in Vancouver. Burke is a weasel and hypocrite.
this really has nothing to do with trying to get defensive help. Phil and Claude do NOT get along. Having to get a player "up" for a game when your in the NHL is absolutely ridiculous, but that's what it's come to with this kid. The sky IS obviously the limit, but it takes more than a coaching/front office staff to make the player WANT to be that great. Kessel could EASILY be one of the more dominant players for the next decade. Its really up to him whether he WANTS to or not...
How does a miscommunication get THAT far along? LOL
I recall hearing in March that Phil was not happy in Boston so I guess all this open horse trading has been done with his blessing. I would like to keep this kid cause he's only going to get better but if he has to go, so be it.
Why do I get the feeling our GM is a moron..plus Burke is an a-hole. How did all these rumors leak out? This makes Chiarrelli look stupid. Never deal with Burke especiallly if he is in your own division.
The interesting thing about this trade is...if you don't want Kessel why not make the trade straight up. And if Toronto doesn't want Kaberle why not do it, also. I think both teams want to keep their player but were looking to see if there were any suckers out there. Turns out the Bruins and Leaf are the biggest fools. No surprise there............
What kind of an idiot is Brian Burke? If he really wasn't going to include his 1st round pick, what in God's name would make him think anyone would trade Phil Kessel AND a 1st round pick for Thomas Kaberle? Given that Kessel is already better than Kaberle and still improving, what kind of an idiot would Chiarrelli have to be to make that trade?
Kessel for Kaberle and the #7 pick would have been a good deal for the B's. The cap hits would have been about the same, they would have added a puck moving d-man and added another top prospect to the pipeline. The Bruins didn't advance because they didn't have enough puck moving d-men. Adding Kaberle to the mix would have given the B's the best defense corps in the league. Wheeler could step into Kessel's role right now and put up similar numbers while playing two way physical hockey.
