Schaefer headed out?
The Bruins have placed veteran winger Peter Schaefer on unconditional waivers, a move that typically signals a club's intention to buy out a player.
However, Boston GM Peter Chiarelli said just now that he has not yet made such a decision.
''Maybe,'' Chiarelli wrote via email, ''but [we] may keep him.''
Schaefer, with one year left on his deal, would receive some $700,000 each of the next two seasons, his salary to be counted against the cap.
Schaefer, acquired from Ottawa, spent all of last season in the minors (Providence/AHL).
The league's annual two-week buyout period ends today. However, clubs are allowed to buy out players after the alloted period, provided they have at least one other player entering salary arbitration. It remains to be seen if any unsigned Bruins will file for arbitration.

If this is true then more good news for Jacobs accounting sheets. The bad news is for the Bruins fans who are hoping to sign Kessel, Hunwick and Bitz.
They better not buy him out .... the B's are already tight to the cap with an expected decrease next year ... you can't just throw away nearly a million in cap space, especially not this year when you already have Muzz eating up $1.3. That would make $2M in dead cap space when its apparent the team is already going to have to dump salary to make it under to begin with.
Given that he retired about three seasons ago this is hardly shocking.
I am a Providence Bruins season ticket holder. He was awful here this year. I'd rather an ECHL guy take his roster spot then him. Pay him the money to stay home....we'd all be better off.....he looked like he was playing to not get hurt. It was embarrasing. Yeah, he got a lucky goal or two but you think he'd try harder to resurrct his career. Looked like he pissed away his last chance......nah nah nah nah......hey hey hey....
GOODBYE ALREADY!!!!
Great. Another $700,000 against the cap. What went wrong with this guy?
Dumb move on the Bs behalf.. By buying out his contract they are forced to add another 700k to what is already a tight cap space.. It makes sense for jacobs as he will save the 700k over the next 2 years. Schaefer is scheduled to make 2.1 million by buying him out the will only pay 1.4, but will be stuck with a hit to cap....makes no sense.. just leave him in providence for the year and incur NO hit..
There is no cap....its all a sham. If you can send a guy to Providence to get under the cap then it is all smoke and mirrors. Money is money...buy him out and buy out Bergeron while their at it if he puts up the same numbers as last year......and don't forget Ference and Kobasew...two guys that will be injured by Nov 1..................
Given that a buyout would be another 700K agains the B's cap, this is pretty shocking.
Everyone on here wants to jump to conclusions all the time. It doesn't take an economics major to see this is a bad decision for the club. Even if this saves Jacobs 700K on the remaining year of the contract, I highly doubt the Bruins organization wants to head into the next season with 2 million worth of their cap hit going to bought out players. Talk about wasted cap space!
I say play the guy get your monies worth, let him get some numbersm then put him in the minorsm and someone will pick him up, and it wont cost you a cent,
