TSN amends report on Kessel-Kaberle deal

Posted by Kevin Paul Dupont, Globe Staff June 26, 2009 02:41 PM

MONTREAL -- The respected Canadian sports website, TSN.ca, just now amended what it believes to be Boston's offer to Toronto to acquire veteran blueliner Tomas Kaberle.

According to TSN's report early this morning, the Bruins offered Phil Kessel to the Leafs for Kaberle and Toronto's top pick, No. 7 overall, in tonight's amateur draft.

Now, according to TSN, the Bruins have offered Kessel and a draft pick of their own (not a first-rounder) for the 31-year-old Czech-born blueliner.

About two hours prior to TSN reporting the change, one rumor making the rounds here had the Stars offering third-year blueliner Matt Niskanen and their top pick tonight (No. 8 overall) for Kaberle.

  1. Kessel and a pick for Kaberle? No friggin thanks...if they want Kessel, we should be getting Kaberle and their 2nd round pick.

  1. respected is a bit of a stretch KP - TSN regularly puts up rumours or whatever Dreger hears 2nd-hand

  1. What a mess! Poor Kess, always has his name floating around in trade rumors.
Just get him signed 20M/ 5years, and move Ward, & chucky!

    Get it done Peter!

  1. Please god not Kaberle... For Kessel? Can you say the B's would be getting jipped?

  1. no matter, Leafs will take Dallas offer and package the 7 &8 to move up to 2 when NYI selects Hedman.

  1. No way the B's are going to be able to sign Kessel given cap restrictions, and considering that it's possible his best productivity may be behind him (yes, at 21, but he only has one move and everyone in the league knows that now), getting Kaberle locked in for 2 years seems like a good move to me.

  1. Hey this is Montreal and we love to party but whoever thought up that deal...is drunk!

  1. mitch, kaberle makes slightly less than Kessel looks to make on his next deal so cap space really isnt that much of an issue.

Maybe Kessel flat out doesn't want to play here anymore... can't blame him, he comes back from cancer and mono and some other injuries and puts up fantastic numbers and the team constantly doubts him.

  1. We must be able to move someone else to free up cap space... I don't like this deal at all... and now we're trying to sweeten the deal by offering a draft - even though it's not a first rounder... Come on PC, you have to be more creative.

  1. Mitch - Kaberle would be just as much of a cap restriction for 2 years since he is at 4.25 mil. Move Ward and Sturm if you have to. Get Bitz and Kess signed. Also beed to sign Hunwick and someone like Johnny Oduya (from NJ). Or, just for fun, how about Komisarek.

    Chara/Wideman
    Komisarek/Hunwick
    Stuart/Ference
Those are nice looking pairings, don't you think?

  1. Ugh. I hope this doesn't happen. B's must not think they can sign Kessel.

  1. Toronto wil take the Dallas offer way before Boston's.......

  1. Kessel for Kaberle? Awful. Better not happen. Kaberle is another Wideman, good on offense bad on defense. Why take away goals and get a guy who gives them up? Sign Kessel, drop some dead weight like Axe and Bergeron. They're replaceable now.

  1. Kessel was on his way to a 50 goal season before illness made him miss too many games to get there. How many 50 goal scores have the Bruins ever had? This sounds like a deal even worse than the Boyes giveway. Granted, he may be soft and even injury prone, but he potentially could be an all time goal scorer for the Bruins...not someone else. It's mind boggling that PC could be even thinking this.

  1. what a joke! are you kidding me? has mike oconnel take the team back over? this trade would be a disaster.

  1. This deal better NOT happen! In T.O. we've watched Kaberle for years! Is he smooth-skating? Yes! Can he move the puck? Definitely! Is he a slick passer? No doubt! When games get rough and intense, does he vanish? YES!! While Kessel's career so far has been littered with extraordinary health issues, we still may not have seen the best of him yet! Who knows what he could accomplish if able to avoid the IR for long periods. He could be a Rick Middleton-type sniper who simply knows how to SCORE but with SPEED to say nothing of the TEN-year age difference between the two! PC, DON'T DO IT!!

  1. Don't do it! Kessel has so much upside!

  1. Sign Kessel. If he is signed for the right price there are options of shedding other players to keep Kessel or alternatively, Kessel becomes far more attractive to trade when other teams can see how much it will cost them. Expand your options Chiarelli and sign him.
