Bitz re-ups with Bruins

Posted by Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff July 1, 2009 05:38 PM

Byron Bitz, who became a restricted free agent at noon today, has signed a multi-year extension. Bitz scored four goals and three assists in 35 games in 2008-09. Bitz scored the opening goal in Game 7 against Carolina.

The 24-year-old was one of three Bruins to hit RFA status today. Phil Kessel and Matt Hunwick were the others.

We'll track down details of his contract.

  1. GOOD! Love his energy, his effort and his fearlessness! Exactly the type of player that makes our club tough to play against!

  1. Begin to the Bruins

Never liked the guy, but that was only becuase he wasn't on our team. I think this pick-up is good for the B's, especially at $850k, well done!!

  1. Hope he can score 10 goals next year to help offset the possible
    loss of Kessel's 36.

  1. Good to hear about the Bs getting some of these signings done. Even if Kessel is odd man out. And if someone has to go, he's the one. Better to have the two-way, physical players (Bergeron, Ryder, Kreci, etc.) than one-dimensional 40-goal guys.

    Fluto, thanks for the updates!

  1. Great news! Bruins need more size in their forwards, and retaining Bitz helps that. Still think we need more size though.

First I want to extend Hunwick though, as I think puck moving d is our biggest concern, as the Canes beat us because of their aggressive forecheckers and our inability to get the puck out of our zone.

And in what I saw of Hunwick, he looked like he has the potential to be a very solid puck moving dman. Reminds me alot of Wideman.

  1. Wow this is a huge commitment to Bitz. Almost twice what I thought he'd get. I like it.

Goes a long way towards explaining why there wasn't more $ for Kessel.

  1. granted he had a couple good games in the playoffs, which does go a long way, but having said that i dont think bitz is a good player. he is soft on the puck and for his size he gets pushed around too much. he needs to be more physical and learn how to use his size to his advantage. in all the other levels of hockey he has played he has always been the biggest guy out there and could just skate through people but now with guys as big or bigger he needs to use his body more. hopefully he learns but right now he is soft...
