Bitz's new deal: 2 years, $687,500 average

Posted by Kevin Paul Dupont, Globe Staff July 2, 2009 08:48 AM

Just got our first look of Byron Bitz's new deal, signed yesterday, with the Bruins.

The big winger will earn $675,000 in the upcoming season and then get bumped to $700,000 in 2010-'11.

Overall, a very economical deal for the Bruins, who could see the big kid from Saskatoon provide second-line support these next two seasons.

  1. PC has been extremely methodical and wise so far in FA. I do think he gets Kessel done. Or if not, replaces him wisely. On a side note, gotta love having Burkie back in our division. Looking forward to some battles with the Leafs this year...

  1. Funnels : "On a side note, gotta love having Burkie back in our division. Looking forward to some battles with the Leafs this year..."

Translation: Looking forward to another season of Looch beating the bag out of Komi multiple times :-D

Good to see Bitzy get done at a very cap friendly number. Finger crossed on Hunny and Kes getting done too.

  1. Just getting Burke and the moves he's made probably makes Toronto #2 in the Northeast next season. Buffalo hasn't done much. Montrael is about the same or worse, ditto the Sens.

  1. Great news signing Bitz. Big kid, plays hard, does the little things right. And a great value on top of that. I think the understanding is there that is kind of like a tryout for the big payday in two seasons...

    @b&g:

Sens lose the division, no doubt. Agreed about Buffalo... haven't made any wow moves. They most likely would have made the playoffs last season had Miller not gone down with injury.

Montreal has made some moves, but really have only laterally replaced the players they have lost. Still have a long way to go for them. Price will be the biggest factor this year.

Toronto has done a few good things, don't know if it's enough to make them #2 in the division. Actually, I think it will be a dogfight for that #2 spot, which will most likely be the 7 or 8 seed come playoff time. Still early, and anything can happen.

  1. Hmm, we're getting a clearer and clearer picture of PC's priorities. Krejci - deal done. Bitz - deal done. Begin - deal done.

    I like it.

Might be leaving Kessel out in the cold, though. It's like PC is leaving a certain amount of money open for Kes -- but only a certain amount.

KPD or Fluto - any chance of a cap update at this point? It's starting to become very relevant.

  1. Wow, an awesome deal. - Way to go PC and Bitz.

Agree that Toronto is 2nd best in the division on paper, especially if they get Gustavvson"the monster" that Burke is working on between the pipes.

I think the Habs are worse than last year and I am very suprised that they are giving 5 year deals out. Anyone here about Kovalev? I heard yesterday the deal was done, CBC said today that it wasn't and talks were over.
