Bruins re-sign Boychuk

Posted by Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff July 1, 2009 07:51 PM

The Bruins have re-signed Johnny Boychuk to a one-year deal. The unrestricted free agent was named the AHL's best defenseman last season, as he scored 20 goals and 45 assists in 78 games.

Boychuk appeared in one NHL game last season. Boychuk was originally acquired from Colorado for Matt Hendricks.

ANALYSIS: Haven't seen the numbers on his contract, but it's most likely a one-way deal with a relatively low cap hit. Boychuk is an AHL star but a borderline NHLer. He could be a sixth or seventh defenseman with the big club if he sticks. If not, he'll be a welcome presence in Providence for the younger D-men. This is your classic depth signing.

  1. $7.5 million.

That is rediculous. Gionta to Habs.

Hopefully the Gaborik deal doesn't ramp up the Kessel $$ amount. Havlat and Heatley are the next big dominos to fall.

  1. Talk about over paying by montreal, but hey I'll take it.

Not to mention, they have a small team that should be easy to push around.

I forgot who it was in the playoffs who talked about the Habs being faster than the Bruins and we all saw how that works out. So the Leafs, Sens, and B's all pick up a tough guy (Orr/Exelby, Neil, Begin) and the Habs get smaller. I love it

  1. Mike, it was Christopher Higgins who said they were faster than the Bruins.

  1. Movers and shakers here in Boston!!?? Really big signings to help the team... with Schaefer and Murray now helping the accounting books of Underware North, the ownership focuses on it's weaknesses. Haha. Bitz and Boychuck were with the team last year. The Kessel issue remains a mystery as we move to the cap line. JJ is getting predictable. I think the team needs a buy a hot dog for Bitz game next year.

  1. Boychuk is the top defense prospect in the organization, gotta give him a shot. He's much bigger than Wideman, Ference, & Hunwick. Excellent skater, plays physical, & scored 20 goals last year for the PBruins. Also, Hunwick is a RFA & could be gone if he gets an offer the Bruins aren't willing to match.

  1. He won the Eddie Shore award as the AHL's best defenseman last year. He can score and move the puck like Mike Green, but can also hit and erase forwards like Chara. He just has to learn to play smarter, and if he learns to do that this year, I could see him as a third line guy in 2010-2011.
