Bruins sign Begin

Posted by Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff July 1, 2009 06:16 PM

The Bruins have signed center Steve Begin to a one-year contract. The former Canadien was traded to Dallas last season.

By signing Begin, GM Peter Chiarelli said that fourth-line center Stephane Yelle will not return. Begin will replace Yelle on the fourth line and serve in a penalty-killing role as well.

  1. 1 year for $850k, not bad bruins.

Never liked him but he could do some dirty work for the bruins, we have the muscle to back it up.

  1. Why?

  1. Ok, i usually defend PC but this wasn't scraping the bottom of the barrel, this was picking it up and kicking over the rocks under it.

At least Savard's back is probably safe.
I'd actually rather have Avery who at least has some skill, I'd trust Julien, Chara, Thornton and the rest to keep him under control.

  1. I HATED this punk as a Canadien. Maybe B's figure they'll need more of an edge playing Brian Burke's newly toughened Maple Leafs next season (Komisarek, Colton Orr, Garnet Exelby).

  1. his numbers are awful. thank god he isnt anything more than a 4th liner.

i heard there are takers for Hunwick.. Chiarelli can't let him go..

  1. Begin probably exhaled a big sigh of relief knowing he and Shawn Thornton are on the same team.

an affordable signing to fill an auxilliary role. All 21 spots cannot be filled with NHL stars, some have to be just players. But it is funny to sign someone off the most hated list.

  1. WHY????.... the B'S could've brought up a Sabotka or Marchand next year for much less..... that $$$$ could've been put to better use like improving the defense.....

  1. This is bottom of the barrel, but if you look at what the Leaf's have done today, the B's need a grimey 4th liner to annoy top line players.

Keeps our better players out of the box with virtually no cap hit. It is a one year deal to from a player who needs to prove himself in this division, don't undersand how this is bad for the price.

  1. Hate to give a former Hab a compliment, but I have always liked this guy. Tough as nails, always aggressive, hits very hard. Bruins fans should love him. Definitely a replacement for Yelle.

Guess that means no Recchi coming back, though...

  1. One 4th line center replaces another one. At least he is younger than Yelle.

  1. I dont understand the whole Hunwick debate. He isn't that great. He had a decent playoff and an unfortunate event which made the Boston "faithful" fall in love with him.

I watched the whole season. He is at best a dime a dozen player, the team won't win the Cup with the re-signing of Matt Hunwick, no matter what Jack Edwards says.

  1. Not sure why a Baby B couldn't have moved into the 4th line? Begin is a douchebag but now he's our douchebag, if he can get under the skin of opposing forwards, score a few goals and kill penalties then well done PC. Wonder if he'll get along with Savard right away? Good to see Bitz back, Hunwick would be nice to give some mobility on the backline. Guess they'll wait on Kessel and for the market to dictate what they offer him if anything.

Once Hunwick was called up from Providence, The bruins were 39-8-7 with him in the lineup, and 13-10-3 when he was a healthy scratch.

He's a fantastic puck moving defenseman who looks like he is only going to get better. I hope he remains an integral part of the Bruins for many years to come.

  1. @ Harry

I don't know how you can say that Hunwick was the cause for the Bruins hot streak. He played well, and so did everyone else at that time. I just don't think he is that proven of a player.

I'm not trying to start a riff with anyone, the talk here today has been awesome as it was last year, I just beleive Hunwick is vastly overrated and I just hope the Bruins dont just throw money at him. Anthing more than $600k is too much for him but most people seem to think he is in the $1.1 million range, no way.

  1. Meant $800k, I've been too jumpy with the keys today beacause of the deadline, sorry

This is healthy hockey talk, no riff here, don't worry. I didn't mean to say that Hunwick was the cause of the Bruins hot streak, but he definitely positively impacted the team in a pretty big way. Ference was playing outstanding defense until a slap shot broke his leg against Montreal. Ference was arguably the best one on the team up until that point. Hunwick filled in beautifully for Ference, it was as if Ference wasn't even gone. The Bruins got hot at around the same time and never looked back. I'd give him as much as 1.3 million (Mark Stuart's second contract). 1.3 million is def on the high side, though, so I hope we sign him long term (because I'm quite positive he'll be worth way more than that in two or three years).

Having puck moving defensemen is so important nowadays. It's true that the Bruins don't NEED Hunwick, but I think he'll be a huge asset to this team.

  1. What Harry said.

Hunwick is the best two way dman the Bruins have drafted in over a decade. Letting him go for any price under $2.5 is absurd, and even at 3 probably more costly than the contract.

If I were PC, I'd go extend Stuarts contract now while i can still afford it, I suspect this is his year.

    Posted by b&gbleeder July 1, 09 08:21 PM
  1. Some idiot (or smart) GM is going to offer Hunwick more money than the $600, $800 or $1.1M you are floating. Montador just got $1.5M/year.

What did Montador do for Bruins? He had the assist on one of the key goals in Carolina series - problem was Staal scored the goal and not a Bruin.

He was weak here in Anaheim too.

Montador has no potential - what you see is what you get, but Hunwick has a ton of potential.

Dont be surprised when someone offers Hunwick a deal that begins with a 2.

Posted by SoCalDoubleBruin July 1, 09 08:35 PM
  1. I disagree guys.

The Bruins have frequently overpaid for players based off of one good year. I am just hoping they don't do it again.

I do think Hunwick is overated (hope I am wrong) but cant see giving him a big contract based on a good year. Also, he wasn't there the whole year either, he was back and forth from Providence, he was like a firecracker in the system with fresh legs.$2.5 Million, or $3, I cant see that heppening, I hope that doesn't happen.

Posted by Dan July 1, 09 08:44 PM
  1. I just can't see Hunwick going for that much. I mean Scudderi, Seidenberg and some other decent young D-men are still out there.

But who know's, the devils landed Oduya for way too much. I just hope the team that offers Hunwick that much money isn't named the Boston Bruins.

(even though I am now up to $1mil for Hunwick, I would be a terrible GM, haha)

Posted by Dan July 1, 09 09:00 PM
  1. Hunwick shouldn't fetch over $1.5 on a short term deal. The kid has played 66 NHL games .... 66 ... 3/4 of one season ... no one is paying him $3M and if someone does ... PC should let him go.

Posted by DoubleA July 2, 09 12:23 AM
  1. Hey guys GILL GOT 2.5M !
Maybe Hunwick is asking over 2M and this is why they put under contract Boychuk.
