Bruins unlikely to sign Bradford

Brock Bradford will become an unrestricted free agent on Aug. 15. (Essdras Suarez/Globe Staff)

Things could change prior to Aug. 15, the date Brock Bradford can become an unrestricted free agent. But as of now, Bradford will most likely not sign with the Bruins, who own the former Boston College captain's draft rights.

"Right now, it's not looking like we'll sign him," said Don Sweeney, director of hockey operations and player development.

Bradford, Boston's seventh-round pick in 2005, scored 25 goals and 17 assists in his senior season at BC. The 5-foot-10, 175-pound forward projects to be a scorer in the AHL. But Yannick Riendeau, signed as a free agent on April 2, had overtaken the 22-year-old Bradford on the depth chart and could serve as an offensive-minded player in Providence in 2009-10. The 21-year-old Riendeau, unable to participate in this week's development camp because of a shoulder injury, scored 126 points in 64 games in 2008-09 for Drummondville of the QMJHL.

ANALYSIS: It's always tough when you don't sign your draft picks. But Bradford, the team's last pick in 2005, wasn't high on Boston's depth chart. He was a talented scorer at the college level, but will have to adjust to the AHL grind against bigger and older players. Of the eight players selected in 2005 (Matt Lashoff was the first-round pick), two remain in the organization: Mikko Lehtonen and Vladimir Sobotka.

  1. Fluto, as a BU guy, how could you let this photo get posted?

  1. Good luck to him, but the Bruins don't need any more miniature forwards.

  1. Outstanding point, hondo. Unfortunately no shots of Eric Gryba putting Bradford through the wall. At least I didn't post the one of Bradford hoisting the NCAA trophy two summers ago...

  1. I love the small guys.Mites ,squirts, peewees, all the way up to Hockey East. Here is the problem though. In todays depth of hockey for the most part ,only the 5-11 on survive.Mass hockey sucks because for the most part ice time is 1/2 sheet, and the little ones tend to dominate ice time from mites on up from day one.Only in the fertile ice land of Canada and the midwest can the bigger kids get the playing time to develop. The corn grows bigger and better in those places.

  1. On a completely different subject: one of the posters of the Bruins that go up the walkway to North Station has been blacked out. It's the fourth one from the Garden.

    Anyone remember who it was?

nhl1, just out of curiosity, what town in MA do you coach in?

  1. Mickey, I am no longer coaching, retired. The lack of good (full Sheet) inexpensive ice is hurting kids in massachusetts. The scouts or produce buyers throw them back.Unfortunatly The crops in Mass are getting smaller.

  1. Hey nhl1 and Medford Mickey...you guys should check out the documentary "Pond Hockey". Pretty interesting section on how ice is tough to come by, and how hockey players can develop better if they have unlimited ice availability outdoors. That documentary (plus Jack Falla's books) is the reason I put a rink in my backyard last year, and will continue to do so.

  1. Wow, just a taste here of what the rest of Hockey East will have to put up with this season from the fanboys.

By the way, Fluto is okay despite being a BU grad.
