B's to air on 98.5 The Sports Hub

Posted by Chris Forsberg, Boston.com Staff July 14, 2009 12:30 PM

The Bruins announced today that they have extended their contract with CBS Radio, but all games this season will shift to 98.5 The Sports Hub, which debuts on Thursday, Aug. 13.

The content previously offered on 98.5 is moving up the dial to become Mix 104, as WBCN (104.1) signs off after 41 years on the air. 98.5 The Sports Hub, which will also air Patriots games starting this season, bills itself as Boston's newest and only FM sports station. The station is expected to be dubbed WBZ-FM.

BRUINS REACH AGREEMENT ON TERMS TO EXTEND CONTRACT WITH CBS RADIO BOSTON; B’S GAMES TO BE BROADCAST ON BOSTON’S NEWEST AND ONLY FM RADIO SPORTS STATION, “98.5 THE SPORTS HUB”

BOSTON -- The Boston Bruins announced today that they have reached an agreement on terms to extend their contract with CBS RADIO Boston, which has been the radio home of the Bruins since the 1995-96 NHL season. Additionally, CBS RADIO Boston announced today the arrival of “98.5 The Sports Hub,” which will debut on Thursday, August 13 at 98.5 on the FM radio dial. This new FM sports station - the only FM station of its kind in the Boston marketplace - will serve as the radio home of the Boston Bruins beginning in the 2009-10 season and the New England Patriots of the NFL beginning with their 2009 season.

“This is an exciting day for not just Bruins fans, but for fans of all of Boston’s sports teams,” said Bruins Principal Charlie Jacobs. “For the first time in Boston, listeners will have an all-sports station on the FM dial which will be the home of the Bruins and the New England Patriots. CBS RADIO Boston has truly been a great partner of the Bruins over the last 14 years and we are thrilled to continue this partnership with them as they launch their new Sports Hub venture.”

“98.5 The Sports Hub” will feature a wide assortment of sports talk and play-by-play programming and showcase personalities including Toucher and Rich in morning drive. The station will assume the call letters WBZ-FM upon launch, pending FCC approval. A full talent and programming schedule for the station will be available at a later date.

Adding to the distribution of the station, “98.5 The Sports Hub” will also be an online destination and interactive experience powered by CBSSports.com (www.cbssports.com). For the consummate Boston sports fan, www.985thesportshub.com is a one-stop hub for everything related to Boston sports featuring an array of local content including blogs from the station’s personalities, sports videos, scores, polls, message boards, community groups and the most up-to-date sports news, as well as on-air schedules, team schedules and talent information.

On Wednesday, August 12 MIX 98.5 will change its dial location and move to 104.1 FM, becoming MIX 104 and will feature the same music and personalities familiar to listeners, while WBCN will sign off after 41 years on the air.

Prior to this new arrangement, Bruins games could be heard on WBZ Radio 1030 AM since the 1995-96 NHL season.

  1. Love it. B's getting some FM airtime. Sad to see BCN to go though.

  1. UGH - a "mix" station? That just sucks like a mountain of lemons.

  1. This is why I now subscribe to satellite radio. Commercial radio absolutely stinks.

  1. Great for the B's
A sad day for BCN's fans today and those who grew up with the original 'Rock of Boston'.......

  1. This is great. FM comes through on most mp3 players. maybe we will get a REAL pre and post game show now instead of WBZ talk host begrudgingly giving up their air time to Dave and Bob. P.S. "Bob" read the article. Mix is moving to 104.1 BCN and this will be an all sports station (good luck fighting the bohemoth EEI.)

  1. so how many bruins games will be preempted by patriots and celtics games? I'm actually going to lose the ability to hear the games now. Not happy about moving the B's

  1. Sorry for all the head bangers who will miss all the 'talk' from morons like Opium and Andy to the "We're paying for What?!" Howerd Stern. The music was ok, when they actually played it, but the true Irony, for those not paying attention was what the Call letters stood for: BCN

Boston Concert Network. BCN used to be a classical music station. :)

  1. Finally a sports station that can be heard in Boston on FM, lookout WEEI here comes the Sports Hub. Maybe they'll talk sports in the morning and wipe D&C off the radio.

Well, CBS doesn't have the Celtics, so zero there. And How many of the Pats games overlap with B's games? Maybe 4 in a season, including playoffs? At most. And I'm sure those games will be broadcast on the regular AM. The difference hearing the B's in FM as opposed to AM will more than make up for any concerns youhave...

  1. I'm sooooooo glad the Bruins are gone from WBZ. Pro sports are fine for those that follow but especially in this day and age I'd rather listen to Night side and hear the issues facing all of us today.

  1. I just hope Dave and Bob are still going to be broadcasting. They're great to listen to on 1030.

  1. Why get rid of BCN? EEI will blow your doors off when it comes to sports talk and the music on 98.5 is garbage. Looks like Entercom is the winner here, they thank you I'm sure on behalf of the many many listeners you have just handed over to them at AAF and they'll deal with the 2 or 3 listeners that you might take from EEI before you go belly up. You closed down the wrong station idiots.

  1. Glad to hear the Bs can be found on an FM station this year. And even better point brought up by Irisht8 about Dennis and Callahan. I can't stand how one sided they are; they talk more about politics than anything, and they supposed to be a sports radio network. I've been changing over to Mike and Mike in the Morning on ESPN AM 890. This should give us a chance to listen to some fresh voices actually talk sports and not have to deal with D&C discuss Palin every morning.

  1. WBX AM could be heard across hald the US. I could listen to Bruins games at night in New Hampshire, Richmond, VA and St Louis, MO. No more!

What decade are you living in? None of them have been on BCN in a long time.

  1. B's deserve this attention. Better not give more airtime to the Pats - gay.
    Sad to see 104.1 go.

  1. R.I.P. "The Rock" of Boston.
I haven't listened to them since Howard Stern went to satellite though.

Good news for the Bruins though! How nice to have them on FM!

  1. I stopped listening to BCN when O&A got dumped (except for Pats games). WEEI should have moved to an FM station years ago as they got bigger and bigger. It sounds so much better (go figure).

I'll probably listen to a new sports station in the morning, then go back to EEI for the rest of the day.

  1. I am all for competition for EEI. All they do is yell at each other and the callers all day. I will not listen to D&C because I do not respect their constant political views. I do listen to Mike and Mike, but would prefer local sports and much less commercials.

    Posted by justthinking23 July 14, 09 04:56 PM
  1. Actually WEEI could end of being big losers here. If this new station was to say to the patriots that we are your broadcast partner and as such we want exclusive rights to players and to Patriots Monday and Friday I am sure Kraft will do it since he wants the station that carries his teams games to be successful.

And if that happens WEEI will lose access to the Pats players which could be killer to them during the season

  1. I've got to agree with 4OrrScores; when I tune into "The #1 Rated Sports Station in America", I want to listen to sports talk, not political commentary. Leave that to the whackjobs on 96.9. Having BCN (or whatever their call letters will end up being) provide some credible competition may make the honchos at EEI realize that sports radio should have some sports talk.

Can't wait to hear the B's on Hi-Def radio!

  1. 98.5 Sports Hub sounds like it's going to be awesome. It will be good to hear the Bruins broadcast in stereo on FM. Now Sports Hub just needs to get some good on air talent who want to talk about sports and won't act like the iditos on WEEI. The problem with WEEI is that they hardly talk about sports anymore and their commercial breaks are rediculous. Hey D&C-if you have to read news stories and talk about local politics and news than shorten your show. Sports Hub-make it about the sports, let callers make their points and don't talk over each other like they do on WEEI. You'll get one chance to win the sports fans over so make sure you do it right. Get a great morning show (not Toucher & RIch) and a strong Day Time Sports Guy so we have something good to listen to (Right now Dale & Holley are horrible! They don't know sports-the closest they got to sports careers was being stuffed into lockers by the varsity athletes in their high schools). You'll have a tough time beating Big O in evenings, but you have a great opportunity here every where else. Don't mess it up!

  1. I will miss hearing the Bruins as WBZ could be heard here in PA.
Guess I will have to become a Flyer fan.

  1. The Bruins are the kings of bad publicity.

Only team that could ever take something as good as moving the broadcast from AM to FM, and link it with a top rock station going off the air to make them look bad.

Going to laugh when EEI destroys sports 98.5 like it did ESPN Boston. Hope to see BCN get brought back when this fails.

    RIP WBCN

  1. WBZ was my only contact with the BRUINS growing up, and until now I would take advantage of its signal strength to listed to games in the car or away from the computer. It came in clear as a bell in Northeastern PA, and I shall miss it.

  1. As a long time Bruin fan living in Canada, sorry to hear about hockey broadcasts moving to an FM station. When I couldn't get Boston games on TV, I could always tune in WBZ 1030 on the am dial. It was a strong signal that came in loud and clear at night. That won't happen on the FM dial.

  1. Rock and Roll LIVES!
    WBCN is DEAD!
WBCN hasn't been Rock and Roll for about 20 years.
WZLX is true Rock and Roll and they're owned by CBS too.
So CBS cut Dead Weight and any true Rock fan should only be saying good riddance. And ditch Toucher and Rich too.
And if the Krafts use their power and influence by making Patriots players and personnel available exclusively to 98.5 then the station should and will flourish.
Oh yeah, and who listens to AM and FM radio for music anymore anyway?!

  1. If this could lead to the downfall of WEEI then that could only be a good thing for New England. Nothing would be better than seeing Dennis & Callahan in the unemployment line where they belong with the rest of the clowns at that pathetic excuse for a sports station. If right-wing radio is your kind of thing then there are PLENTY of other choices.

Posted by unhhockey July 14, 09 09:05 PM
  1. Here's hoping they'll have local talk in the overnight hours like WFAN and unlike WEEI.

  1. Hey rusty, your comment "Going to laugh when EEI destroys sports 98.5 like it did ESPN Boston. Hope to see BCN get brought back when this fails."

ESPNBoston and other challenger have failed against WEEI for a couple of big reasons, 1 being signal strength (not a problem on FM), 2 no connections to local sports being ESPN was mostly national this new station has the Patriots and the Bruins which one more Boston team than WEEI has. 3. Bob Kraft will want to see this stations succeed. This will be the first time WEEI has a real sports radio challenger

    This will

  1. Rusty,

you must be one of the many tools that call in to WEEI shows that I hear when Im flicking through channels and land on EEI just to laugh for a minute.
WEEI sucks, wake up. Im glad that this city will finally have another sports channel and not be trash like the one we've been stuck with all this time.

"Bruins are the kings of bad publicity?"
what kind of stupid comment is that? did you arrive to the Boston sports scene the same time as most of the other bandwagoners did in 2004?

  1. Man... Why can't the whole Jacobs family DROP DEAD. First they destroy the B's with the skinflint of an owner, Jeremy, who makes the Simpson's Mr Burns look decent, and now they DESTROY BCN. Total shame

Posted by Maui July 14, 09 10:36 PM
  1. Not sure if I like this move. On one hand it will be nice to hear the B's on FM but what happens when you are outside of the signal range? I could listen to 1030 in CT to catch the game. Only solution I think would be XM Home Ice.

  1. I was really hoping for an alternative to "sports talk" instead of listening to D&C every morning. I've been listening to ESPN Radio (AM 890) lately, but there are so many commercials, I end up switching back to WEEI before Mike and Mike come back on. From what I've been reading, it looks like The Sports Hub will be keeping their morning show of Toucher and Rich. I haven't heard much about them, but a lot of people are saying that they will not be changing their show to focus more on sports. I guess I'll just have to preset FM 98.5 for my Bs and Pats games. Maybe they'll realize that people want a sports show for the morning drive--unlike D&C's politics--and decide to go a seperate way from Toucher and Rich.

As for those who were complaining about the Bs losing time to the Pats and Cs on radio, they won't. The Celtics will still be aired on WEEI; the Patriots play on Sundays. Looking back at the schedule, how many games do they really conflict with from last season? 2 games were on the same Sundays, and they were at least 4 hours apart. There shouldn't be a problem for any Bs/Pats/Cs fans who want to check out The Sports Hub 98.5

  1. Thank Goodness, WEEI has becume a freakin toilet bowl. Planet Mikey is the worst. No sports talk, just fools calling in, and dim- bulbed girlies gigiling on the emails. As a serious Red Sox, Pats, and B's fan (yes I remember the last Stanley Cup in Boston 71/72), this should be a breath of fresh air.
Best of Luck and look foward to the air date.
