Camp wrap, Day 1

Posted by Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff July 7, 2009 02:31 PM

BEDFORD -- The Bruins have concluded off-ice workouts at the Edge Sports Center. They are going through an Outward Bound course this afternoon as part of team-building exercises. Camp was moved to Bedford from Ristuccia Arena because of the weather.

"They're going to learn about what the expectations are from our staff, our group, the Boston Bruins," said Don Sweeney, director of hockey operations and player development. "They'll have a clear understanding of what it's going to take going forward today. They're going to learn something about us. We're going to learn something about them. That's the second piece we're going to learn, both on the ice and off the ice in working with them. The third thing is I think they're going to learn about themselves a little bit, realizing where they are in the fitness realm of things, both on and off the ice, and the expectations for them going forward as they come back for training camp. It's about comfort level all the way across the board."

* Joe Colborne weighed in this morning at 206 pounds. Colborne said he's gained 13 pounds from the start of his freshman year at Denver. "That's been great for me," Colborne said. "I've gotten stronger too, so I'm really excited about that. It's a big step in the right direction."

* Tommy Cross, who underwent knee surgery on March 1, didn't participate in any sprints today. Starting tomorrow, Cross will skate on his own, with no stops and starts to begin his session. Cross said he'll be ready for the start of his sophomore season at Boston College.

* Yannick Riendeau is wearing a sling because of an injured shoulder.

* On-ice activities begin tomorrow at Ristuccia Arena at 9:30 a.m. All on-ice sessions are free and open to the public.
