Lucic invited to Team Canada camp

Posted by Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff July 2, 2009 10:08 AM

Milan Lucic was the only Bruin named to Team Canada's Olympic orientation camp. The camp will take place in Calgary from Aug. 24-27.

Lucic will be one of 25 forwards to participate in the camp. Forty-six total players were named to the roster.

Marc Savard and Dennis Wideman were under consideration but not named to the roster given Canada's depth at center and defense.

Here is the rest of the roster.

ANALYSIS: Quite a feather in Lucic's cap to earn the invite after only two NHL seasons. But given his unique skill set, it's not surprising that he's under consideration for the final roster. The Canadians are loaded with skill, and they need players like Lucic to grind and bang. Savard was facing far too much up-the-middle competition in Sidney Crosby, Vincent Lecavalier, Joe Thornton, Eric Staal, Jordan Staal, and Mike Richards.

  1. No Savvy? That's criminal.

  1. Congrats to Lucic, but he better promise to lay off of Krejci, Chara, and Kessel (if we resign him). Last thing I want to see is the Looch Freight Train barrelling towards a fellow Bruin in a stupid Olympic game. I might close my eyes.

  1. Awesome for Lucic. He's just not allowed to get hurt.

But honestly, what crackhead puts; Doan, Morrow, Mareleau the Melter and the nearly 400 year old Sakic ahead of Savard? A really strong case can be made for Jordan Staal as well.

  1. I just saw this report on tsn myself and was pretty surprised to see Lucic on there and not Savard but good point about Center. It's very tough to compete there and Lucic brings a unique physical game to the LW spot. Plus he could be a 30 goal scorer someday. If he ever gets 40 I'll then compare him to Cam but he needs at least 40 a year someday. Even with that it's generous.

    Good luck to Milan.

  1. Hmm, missed him the first time...

Anyone else expect the coaches to put J Staal and Lucic on a checking line at some point?

  1. What a great day for Lucic. Just to be in camp will be yet another phase in his development. Imagine what it would be like for him to play at home during the Olympics on NHL-size ice? Why can't he make the team? All he does is prove doubters wrong.

  1. The Olympics are definitely a lot less physical than the NHL I believe because its all superstars on the ice. Lucic's presence would be needed along the boards, getting those defensemen off the pucks in the corners.

Its scary to think Canada could easy field 2 or 3 gold capable teams.

  1. Savvy will be there! No, he didn't get an invite to orienation, but all he has to do is have a great first quarter. I was more surprised Wideman didn't get an invite! He certainly should be there wayyyy before Marc Staal for sure. From what I hear if Pneuf doesn't change his attitude he won't be making it either. Heard an interview earlier today with Stevie Y & he praised Looch big time. I think there's a job for him if he continues the way he plays. Stevie said he was impressed with Milan's job during the reg season, but was hugely impressed with his stuff during the play-offs even more. GO LOOCH!.

  1. From today's Toronto Star:

Bruins top scorer Marc Savard didn't make the cut, but heavy-hitting teammate Milan Lucic (was) invited.

"We wanted to bring some different kinds of players, some players who maybe aren't leading their teams in scoring, but maybe can play a different kind of role," said Yzerman.

"Lucic is a big, strong, skilled forward that can go up and down his wing and he can make a play and score a goal. Based on his play in the playoffs, he's a guy that can bring a different element, so we won't have four lines that do the same thing."
