Updated salary breakdown
Mark Recchi will be returning for one more season in Boston. (Barry Chin/Globe Staff) |
With Steve Begin, Mark Recchi, and Byron Bitz in the fold, the 2009-10 roster is rounding into form. Here's where the Bruins stand:
Forwards
Marc Savard, $5 million
Patrice Bergeron, $4.75 million
Michael Ryder, $4 million
David Krejci, $3.75 million
Marco Sturm, $3.5 million
Chuck Kobasew, $2,333,333 million
Glen Murray, $1,383,333 million (buyout)
Mark Recchi, $1 million
Blake Wheeler, $875,000
Milan Lucic, $850,000
Steve Begin, $850,000
Byron Bitz, $687,500
Peter Schaefer, $566,667 (buyout)
Shawn Thornton, $516,667
* Phil Kessel is a restricted free agent.
Defensemen
Zdeno Chara, $7.5 million
Dennis Wideman, $3.875 million
Aaron Ward, $2.5 million
Andrew Ference, $1.4 million
Mark Stuart, $1.3 million
* Matt Hunwick is a restricted free agent.
* Because Johnny Boychuk is considered a bubble player (similar to Vladimir Sobotka), he is not included in this model.
Goalies
Tim Thomas, $5 million
Tuukka Rask, $850,000
Current cap hit: $52,487,500.
ANALYSIS: The Bruins have $4,312,500 of cap space under the $56.8 million ceiling with Kessel and Hunwick yet to sign. Just about impossible to sign both unless movement of existing salaries takes place.

You forgot the 2.1 Mil i bonus cushion
Heard this morning that Kessel is going to Calgary for Robin Regehr?? I like the deal, I would think it would mean that Hunwick won't be back. Regehr is a solid player and he would help us out a ton in the D zone.
I'm sure this trade wouldnt sit well with most people but it would be awesome IMO.
The Bruins have the ability to go over the cap until a certain date before they have to be under – what is that date? As things stand once the free agents are weeded out most clubs will wait until training camp to assess their needs. So the Bruins should have plenty of time to sort things out. No need to rush, but rather time to work out what is best for the team.
MOVE KOBASEW-I LOVE THE GUY BUT HE MAKES TOO MUCH MONEY FOR THE ROLE HE PLAYS ON THE BRUINS!!!!( BRING IN CHRIS NEIL-CHEAPER AND MEANER)!!!!......AND WHATEVER THIS LOVE AFFAIR WITH WIDEMAN IS-GET OVER IT!!!! HE IS GROSSLY OVER PAID...time to cut some dead weight....AND think realistically
OATSEY, Neil signed with Ottawa already and he makes $2mill per year (pretty much the same as Kobasew).
Types all in caps and then makes two stupid comments. Way to go.
there are many trading partners in the west that need what the b's have (Nash, STL)---winger and d-man. Nashville has almost 18 million of cap room, more than enough to take on Ward and Ferrence's pay. That would allow more than enough to sign Kess--also, a little skeptical of Hunwick coming back if chia made signing boychuck a priority over him.
We need another D-man. Hunwick is worth signing for at least this season. Losing PKess. would be a huge mistake, IMO! Both these player showed bigtime promise last year! Imagine if PK was healthy all year, can you say 50 goals!! It will be nice to have Marco back, but we are basically losing PJ for Begin, hope he's that good on the pen kill as we will lose Yeller also. I like the TT, TR combo in goal, very solid there. Here's hoping for one more great move, and the that part-timers in Prov. are as awesomet as they have been in the last couple of years!!
Dan put down the crack pipe and take a look at Regehr's numbers. No goals and 8 assist for the year ( 75 games).. Pretty hard to not get more than 8 points in a year playing in 75 games. Hang up your Calgary Shirt for the 4th and pull out on Halloween.
I beleive it's the begining of camp (not sure) JAD but you can check here http://www.nhlscap.com/teamnumbers.htm
In agreement with Oatsey Kobasew good, solid, hits but we need the room and there would be plenty of takers. Chuck and the rights to Soderberg (since he's not coming to camp again) could bring in a reasonably priced puck moving Dman.
Haha, Blackandgold.
Stats? Compared to Hunwick's? But everyone here seems to be drinking the what-could-be Kool-aid with Hunwick. How can a solid D-man that can move the puck and is a leader be a bad pick-up for a dime a dozen small winger (Kessel)? Another Brad Boyes/Phil Kessel will come around again that you can fall in love with, a solid D-man that can log minutes is tough to come by.
Just was telling you what I heard this morning.
Why is Ward still here (apart from the media soundbites)? Move him for a bag of pucks & clear space for Kessel & Hunwick. I would like Regher - solid in his own end & hard hitter - but not for Kessel. Also good to see Habs overspending on garbage & Kommissarek not escaping Looch's footprints on his face by staying in the East.
Kessel at his age and his early achievements will command a better D man than Regher. I like Kessel but would move him for the right player. Bs dont need more goals this year. They need a player with puck mobility. Wideman is the closest they have and he cant hit the side of a barn.. Too bad as he should have more goals. Maybe this year. Kessel is only 21 and he has proven he can find the net. Maybe it is Ward and or Ferrence and Kessel stays along with another D man and Hunwick. I would not pull the trigger on a lame deal with Kessel. Too much upside. Be Patient and fill a nice void or get creative.
The near $2M in buyouts hurt b/c they could really use that extra space.
I agree, I don't think PC will make a 1/2-arsed deal w/ Kessel. If Kessel can fetch us a true bon-a-fide #2 d-man that fits within the cap, then I think PC will make it & that would be huge and a great move.
For the Bruins to take the next level, I think they need to strengthen the top-4 D. There is a huge drop-off after Chara. A bunch of #5/#6 dmen playing top-4 doesn't cut-it.
I don't believe in not changing anything b/c of a succesful previous season. Overall changes aren't necessary of course, but tweaks need to be made to improve & go to the next level. Next season is a new season, a new start for everyone and other teams improve.
The thing about Kessel is that he flourished this year maybe b/c of the system the Bruins played & playing w/ a great playmaker in Marc Savard. Maybe he doesn't get the stats playing elsewhere.
For Sturm's sake, its a good thing he has the no trade. Per Cam Neely & I agree fully, I'm sure they are expecting this guy to provide the 40 goals as he should.
looks like sobotka won't crack the line up, which is a shame. and I'll miss kessel, but hunwick has gotta be the priority.
Fluto, how will bubble players be counted against the cap? What makes them bubblers and not Rask, say? Assuming Sobotka fills in for a month or so for Krejci, does he then need to be counted in, putting us over?
Can we get a CapEconomics 101 review?
Hey Fluto yes what about the 2.1 Mil in bonus cushion ???
go see nhlnumbers.com and you will see the Bruins have 6mill in cap space !
B's Legion....That where I got My info...GREAT SITE.
HEY "BFan"........I bet you $50 I'd knock u on your arse with one punch(or WHATEVER u could afford-NO PROBLEM!. ALSO(caps lock-lol)I'm also not sure that my opinions are necessarily stupid.....they are my opinions....). Sorry i missed the Neil signing "bruins34"....i always liked the dude. Always thought he'd be great for the Bruins. Wideman is still over paid and im no fan of his at all.....
The bonus cushion will be back in play for 2009-10. However, teams that go over the ceiling are penalized the following season. And with the cap expected to drop in 2010-11, it's just about guaranteed that NO team will be going over $56.8 million in 2009-10.
badly spent $$$$ this week not only means the B'S will be forced to move their top goalscorer but also be unable to acquire an important d-man.... Sturm should be back healthy and be able to do what Recchi was signed to do.... youngsters Sabotka or Marchand could've handled what Begin was acquired for.... plus i've heard the B'S have made an offer for another habs retread.... Mathieu Dandeneault !!!!.... JJ, please take the checkbook away from Chiarelli because he's done nothing but waste your hard-earned $$$$ since July 1st [except for the signature of Bitz]....
Has to be that PC thinks Sturm makes Kes expendable. I like Sturm, but we all have to remember he missed a whole year. Maybe he jumps back in and starts finding the back of the net immediately, or maybe he doesn't.
I would look to move both Wiedman and Kobasew. As someone else said, Chuckie makes too much money for the role he plays. Love his heart willingness to put it on the line, but just not a ton of production. Weidman is a good player but I think Hunwick could fill his role with more speed and skill. Denis is a quality D man but he is prone to one completely bone-headed play per game. I think Hunwick has more potential. But then again, what do I know, I'm not a NHL GM...
Please, PC, keep Kessel and Hunwick!!!
All this being said who the Bruins can sign Kessel and Hunwick by end of weekend and if they're a little over the cap, so what .
They have till October 1st to tweak their team and fit under the cap. Release a player .
p.s. thx Fluto on explanation of this bonus cushion.
With Rask waiting in the wings $20 million for 4 years for Thomas was a big mistake. I like Thomas but he is 35 and not worth that kind of money. PC has handcuffed himself with that move.
Yes, how dare PC lock-up the Vezina winner for 4 years, thats just brain-dead to lock-up the #1 ranked goalie in the league. If TT has taught you anything, he doesn't go by the typical fold.
And Kess is not needed - you have 9 20+ goal scorers on your top 3 lines. Hunwick will be signed within 2 weeks and hopefully Kess is traded for a top 4 D.
I still, STILL can't believe there are Thomas haters out there. I swear, do people even pay attention? Vezina winner, and future Olympic team goalie. Wake up!
Hay dinglenuts, I'm not a Thomas hater, rather a fan who thinks he could have been had for smaller dollars @ $3M. I have also watched enough AHL games to think that Rask could be a good #1 goalie. That's not a Thomas hater rather a hater of that contract for what will be a 39 year old. Handcuffed.
Why in the world would Thomas sign a 3 million contract here, when he could easily have gone and signed a six or seven million dollar contract elsewhere? Chicago would have jumped at the chance, the Senators would have trampled other teams to do it, and Burke would have laughed himself sick over the opportunity. Get real, there's hometown discounts and there is just stupid, Thomas is not stupid.
When teams bypassed him for 13 years and the Bruins gave him his one and probably only shot, he owes us something. Whether that is a hometown discount of $3MM per year I don`t know. But a 39-40 year old goalie sounds scary at $5MM. I too think Rask may be the real deal.
Tuuka Rask's cap hit is $3.1 million due to his bonus and not $850,000 as in the article. he has a bonus of 2.350million that is to be included. Him being on the team makes the cap space tighter and therefore the kessel signing more difficult to stay under the cap
