Assistant GM Jim Benning has signed a multi-year extension. Benning, formerly Buffalo's director of amateur scouting, was hired in 2006 as director of player personnel. Benning replaced Jeff Gorton as GM Peter Chiarelli's top assistant on July 14, 2007.

"Jim plays a critical role in our management group," Chiarelli said in a statement. "He takes a very aggressive and proactive approach in his recommendations and assessments, underscoring his tremendous management ability and experience. His player evaluation is among the tops in the industry, and his business acumen supports our group greatly."
