Rest day for Bruins

Posted by Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff October 25, 2009 07:32 AM

MONTREAL -- The Bruins, coming off a 4-3 shootout win over Ottawa last night are enjoying a day off today. Thankfully, that allows me to take my time driving home this morning instead of hustling to practice. They will resume work tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. at Ristuccia Arena.

Here's the latest version of Plus/Minus:

Plus

+ The hockey sense of Derek Morris. Without Morris, the Bruins don't tie the game in last night's third. Good play to put a shot on goal with Mark Recchi in front. An even better play to spot David Krejci drifting backdoor, fake the slap shot, and send a pass to the center for the game-tying goal. Playing with Zdeno Chara doesn't hurt.

+ Patrice Bergeron's all-around play. Just when the Bruins need a center to answer the call, Bergeron has done so. But he was good even before Marc Savard went down.

+ Tim Thomas's game-changing stops last night. Doesn't get better than his theft of Daniel Alfredsson.

Minus

- Dennis Wideman's struggles against Ottawa. It's no secret that Wideman sometimes makes dangerous, high-risk plays. Combine that, however, with poor skating, and you've got some issues. The latter is a bigger concern than the former, unless Wideman is still trying to find his timing after sitting out three games because of a shoulder injury.

- The in-and-out touch of David Krejci. The center came up big by scoring the game-tying goal. But overall, Krejci hasn't had the offensive presence the Bruins require of their slick center.

- That I somehow believed the Leafs would be in the mix for a playoff spot. Wow.
