The Bruins can cry into their beers all they want about missing Marc Savard and Milan Lucic. But the Wings were without Johan Franzen, Valtteri Filppula, Brian Rafalski, and Jonathan Ericsson tonight, and still managed to tuck two pucks behind Tim Thomas to claim the 2-0 win.

"Right now, our top end is having a tough time scoring goals," said Claude Julien. "We've tried other players on the power play, but you can't rely on the bottom part of your forwards to go and win you games every night."

Marco Sturm had back-to-back chances in the first that Chris Osgood turned aside. In the second, Michael Ryder tagged a laser off the left post.

* Nicklas Lidstrom, who was missing his regular partner in Rafalski, checked in with a 27:42 performance to shut down the No. 1 line. Lidstrom blocked three shots and threw two hits.

* Two special plays by two of the best centermen in the league led to both Detroit goals. Henrik Zetterberg roofed a shot over Thomas's blocker, and Pavel Datsyuk threw a perfect blind pass to Tomas Holmstrom for the second goal.

* The Bruins are scheduled to practice tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. at Ristuccia Arena.

STICK SALUTE: Shawn Thornton. Led all players with nine hits. Tried his best to get his teammates going.

SIN BIN: Power play. Two shots all game isn't cutting it.

***

All done at the Joe. Wings, 2-0.

19:08 (3). Tim Thomas out of the net.

7:04 (3). Big stop by Tim Thomas on Niklas Kronwall.

5:30 (3). Excellent work by PP1. Lots of movement and looks at the net.

1:03 (3). Tim Thomas robs Pavel Datsyuk after a D-zone turnover by Derek Morris.

Second intermission

After 40 minutes, Wings with a 2-0 lead.

* Nothing resembling a scoring chance on the power play. Credit the Wings, especially their D-men, for being active and winning puck battles.

* Shawn Thornton is trying his best to get his team going. Thornton tried to engage Patrick Eaves after a whistle. The fourth-line wing laid a rare heavy hit on Nicklas Lidstrom, who's usually positioned well enough to avoid big checks.

* Nice hit by Mark Stuart on Darren Helm.

19:05 (2). Absolutely nothing from either PP unit.

17:04 (2). Interference on Niklas Kronwall. Let's see if the PP has any life this time.

14:00 (2). Michael Ryder rattles a one-timer off the left post.

11:33 (2). Tons of speed from the Draper line. Wings flying around.

6:20 (2). Sharp work by Chris Osgood to turn aside Michael Ryder and Blake Wheeler. Osgood is seeing the puck well tonight.

First intermission

After 20 minutes, Wings with a 2-0 lead.

* Same old story for the Bruins. Pretty good start, with Marco Sturm getting the best opportunities, but little resistance after the Wings score the first goal. Looked like Brad Marchand should have been marking Henrik Zetterberg.

* Ill-advised hooking penalty on Sturm to set up Zetterberg's goal. Slam-dunk call for the ref.

* Far too much speed through the neutral zone for the Wings prior to Tomas Holmstrom's goal.

17:43 (1). Wings, 2-0. Pavel Datsyuk gets behind Zdeno Chara. Datsyuk sends a behind-the-back pass for Tomas Holmstrom, who was following the play. Holmstrom muscled off the backcheck of Patrice Bergeron.

14:21 (1). Wings, 1-0. PPG for Henrik Zetterberg over Tim Thomas. Looked like Patrice Bergeron won the draw against Pavel Datsyuk, but Zetterberg stepped in and roofed it. Only two seconds needed.

11:25 (1). Decent movement for PP1. Not much for PP2.

9:32 (1). First PP for the Bruins. As expected, changes for both units.

9:26 (1). Another diving save by Chris Osgood after a funny bounce off the end boards.

9:20 (1). Chris Osgood foils Marco Sturm on the doorstep. Sturm had two quality backhand whacks at the puck.

7:40 (1). Hit of the game so far, with Daniel Paille flattening Ville Leino against the wall.

5:04 (1). Doug Janik beats Steve Begin to the puck for an icing call. The two were traded for each other last season.

1:15 (1). Chara and Bergeron matched against the Datsyuk line.

0:00 (1). Johnny Boychuk is the healthy scratch for the Bruins. No such luxuries exist for the sick and banged-up Wings.
