Final: Canadiens, 2-1 (SO)
Carey Price earned the shootout win by turning aside Mark Recchi. (Jim Davis/Globe Staff) |
The positive: The Bruins scored a goal (!) and earned a point.
The negative: They only scored once and lost in the shootout.
"It's a start," said Patrice Bergeron, who tied the game with a six-on-five goal in the final minute of regulation. "It took us pretty much the whole game to get one,. The chances were there. But it's still not good enough."
* Yet another goose egg from the power play. Zdeno Chara was back on the first unit with Derek Morris, while Dennis Wideman and Matt Hunwick were on the points on the second unit.
* Curious decision to send out Mark Recchi as the No. 3 shooter. It was Recchi's first shootout attempt of the season. Claude Julien said Recchi had been shooting well during practice drills.
* The Bruins practice tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. at Ristuccia Arena.
STICK SALUTE: Chara. Big-time screen on the game-tying goal. Would like to see more of that, perhaps on the power play.
SIN BIN: Marco Sturm. Has to bury a close-range shot sometime.

All done at the Garden. Canadiens in the shootout, 2-1. Mike Cammalleri with the only goal.
All tied after 65 minutes, 1-1. Look for Blake Wheeler and Patrice Bergeron to lead off the shootout.
After 60 minutes of play, tied at 1-1. Good play by Zdeno Chara on the tying goal to get in front of Carey Price and engage Jaroslav Spacek. Sounds like a cure for the PP as well -- Chara in front.
19:08 (3). Tied, 1-1. Patrice Bergeron scores for real this time.
8:14 (3). Dennis Wideman has returned to the bench.
5:52 (3). Dennis Wideman to the room. Took a tumble in the offensive zone.
Second intermission
After 40 minutes, Canadiens with a 1-0 lead. Much better second period for the Bruins, who have a 26-18 shot advantage.
* At this rate, the Bruins are due for a third-period goal. Lots of good work around the net in the dirty areas. Just not finding a way to beat Carey Price with their shots.
* Two more lousy power plays in the second. Nothing doing for either unit.
17:35 (2). Strike that. No goal, net off before the puck went in. Canadiens, 1-0.
17:35 (2). Breaking news -- a Bruins goal. Tied, 1-1. Patrice Bergeron digs the puck out of Carey Price's glove and slides it in.
17:21 (2). Another scrum involving Maxim Lapierre. The agitator tries to goad Andrew Ference into a penalty.
14:35 (2). Mark Recchi tips a shot on goal. Bruins are getting closer.
12:40 (2). Another good shift, this time with Michael Ryder dangling around Jaroslav Spacek to create a chance. Vladimir Sobotka goes into the net. Not the puck.
11:46 (2). Best shift so far by the Bergeron line. Terrific grunt work by Mark Recchi in front.
8:25 (2). Save of the night by Tim Thomas to foil Brian Gionta on the goal line.
7:24 (2). Zdeno Chara off for cross-checking. Two-man advantage for 50 seconds.
6:35 (2). Some heavy hits by Steve Begin and Daniel Paille lead to a scoring chance.
6:13 (2). Marco Sturm off for holding the stick. Second straight game he's taken an offensive-zone penalty.
4:16 (2). Pad save by Carey Price on Steve Begin after a Daniel Paille feed. Price really stretched out the right pad on that one. Jaroslav Spacek shaken up after sliding into the wall.
2:02 (2). Blake Wheeler replaces David Krejci on PP1.
First intermission
After 20 minutes, Montreal with a 1-0 lead. Not a great period for the Bruins after a decent effort last time out against Detroit.
* Barely a flicker of emotion from the Bruins. This is Boston-Montreal, and the hate should be spiked ceiling-high.
* High comedy watching Dennis Wideman wipe out Matt Hunwick prior to Glen Metropolit's goal. Not sure what was going on there.
* Still no explanation on why Metropolit's first goal was waved off.
17:32 (1). Canadiens, 1-0. Glen Metropolit with the goal. Dennis Wideman takes out Matt Hunwick at center ice, allowing Andrei Kostitsyn to get a clear lane to the goal. Kostitsyn wraps it around for Metro in front.
9:35 (1). Surprise, surprise -- Maxim Lapierre in the middle of a post-whistle scrum with Andrew Ference. Brad Marchand gets in a jab.
7:55 (1). Good save by Tim Thomas on Josh Gorges's point floater. Thomas fights through traffic to glove the puck.
6:13 (1). Not a good start for Zdeno Chara. Fighting the puck in the D-zone.
5:40 (1). Couple decent chances for Trent Whitfield so far.
1:41 (1). No goal, says referee Francois St. Laurent. Glen Metropolit took it around the net and beat Tim Thomas. Perhaps because Travis Moen was engaged with Thomas in the crease?
1:00 (1). Chara and Bergeron against the Gomez line.
0:00 (1). Johnny Boychuk is the healthy scratch for the Bruins. Kyle Chipchura and Gregory Stewart are out for the Canadiens.
