Detroit dining report

Posted by Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff November 3, 2009 05:36 PM

Unfortunately, given the state of downtown Detroit, I'm not aware of many dining options in the city outside of Greektown. But because I have some wheels (the underwhelming Chevy HHR), Ann Arbor, about 45 minutes west of downtown, becomes available as a dining destination.

Last night, there was the required visit to Zingerman's Roadhouse, one of Ann Arbor's must-visit joints. Nothing wrong with the four-piece fried chicken meal with slaw and potatoes. Today, after the morning skate, I visited Zingerman's Deli, home of too many sandwiches to name. Went with Randolph's Grand Debut -- Zingerman's take on the croque monsieur. At $15, it's a pricey sandwich, but worth it once a season. Top that with a Kenyan AA at Zingerman's Next Door and you have the Zingerman's hat trick.

Plus, it's always fun to drive around Ann Arbor -- forget about it on the day of a football game, though -- and see the sights of one of America's premier college towns.
