Over a minute after Matt Hunwick put a backhander over Marc-Andre Fleury and into the net, video replay confirmed that the puck had gone in. It was the only goal the Bruins needed, as they gained back-to-back wins for the first time this season.

"It’s something that we’ve had a hard time getting this year and something we talked about before this game," said Tim Thomas, who sparkled in a 27-save shutout. "We need to find some way to start putting some wins together and we were able to accomplish that tonight."

Daniel Paille scored a timely third-period goal to give the Bruins a 2-0 lead, then Patrice Bergeron netted a long-distance shorthanded goal.

* Mark Recchi recorded his 900th career NHL assist on Paille's goal.

* The Bruins have killed off 28 of 29 opposing power plays. The Penguins didn't get a single PP shot on goal.

* The Bruins practice tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. at Ristuccia Arena.

STICK SALUTE: Derek Morris. The defenseman fought through sickness and blocked Matt Cooke's third-period pass to set up Paille's goal.

SIN BIN: Sidney Crosby. Zero points for the fifth straight game, a career-worst slump.

All done at the Garden. Bruins, 3-0.

19:56 (3). Bruins, 3-0. Patrice Bergeron with the long-distance empty-netter.

19:39 (3). Six-on-four PP for Pittsburgh, as Shawn Thornton is sent off for cross-checking Jordan Staal.

17:26 (3). Zdeno Chara not happy that Sidney Crosby has tripped him up two times. Chara has words with Kerry Fraser.

14:39 (3). Terrific glove save by Marc-Andre Fleury to rob David Krejci on the doorstep.

14:15 (3). A dump-in nearly goes into the Boston net. The puck hops off the right post, then Tim Thomas dives to sweep it away.

11:27 (3). Bill Guerin cross-checks Andrew Ference in front of the Boston net to give the Bruins their first PP. Not the smartest play by Guerin.

3:34 (3). Bruins, 2-0. Daniel Paille buries the forehand wrister. Play starts with Derek Morris hitting the deck to stop Matt Cooke's shot. Mark Recchi records his 900th career assist on the goal.

2:41 (3). Tim Thomas reaches back to stop Bill Guerin's backhander.

2:12 (3). Sharp stop by Tim Thomas on Alex Goligoski's one-timer with traffic in front.

Second intermission

After 40 minutes, Bruins with a 1-0 lead. Not for long if the Penguins continue to play like they did in the second, when they put 13 pucks on goal.

* Bruins have been careless with the puck, starting with Zdeno Chara. The captain gave away the puck several times in the defensive zone.

* Fun to watch Jordan Staal go one-on-one down low with Mark Stuart. Two strong, strong men.

16:06 (2). Good forecheck by Daniel Paille on Mark Eaton leads to a decent shot for Patrice Bergeron.

13:52 (2). Penguins have been manhandling the Bruins down low for the last five minutes. Pittsburgh is winning every puck battle and going hard to the net. Bruins are looking scrambly in their own zone. At the other end, not much sustained pressure on M-A Fleury.

7:30 (2). Two-on-one for Jordan Staal and Bill Guerin after Mark Stuart and Matt Hunwick go diving into the bench to avoid a too many men call.

6:30 (2). Michael Ryder shoots wide on an open net. Clever pass by Dennis Wideman to start the opportunity.

4:55 (2). Giveaway by Andrew Ference behind the net to Pascal Dupuis. Tim Thomas turns Dupuis aside.

1:36 (2). Bruins, 1-0. Upon video review, Matt Hunwick's backhander goes under the crossbar and into the net. Going back in time to 1:36.

1:48 (2). Sure looked like a Matt Hunwick goal off the crossbar. No goal, says referee Bill McCreary.

0:00 (2). No sign of Brooks Orpik.

First intermission

After 20 minutes, no score. Bruins with a 10-2 shot advantage.

* As expected, the Bruins are matching Zdeno Chara and Patrice Bergeron against Sidney Crosby. Late in the first, Dan Bylsma double-shifted Crosby with Pascal Dupuis and Craig Adams. But Claude Julien countered by sending Chara out against Crosby.

* Michael Ryder looks like he's skating better tonight than he has been recently. Ryder needs to get his legs going to be an effective player.

12:13 (1). Good scoring chance for Jordan Staal after a Chris Kunitz dish. Kunitz had raced past Dennis Wideman and stretched the play wide.

10:22 (1). Interesting play by Chris Bourque to put a shot on goal from behind the line. Tim Thomas had to reach for the puck and the Penguins got some traffic hunting for a rebound.

9:00 (1). Derek Morris is back on the bench. Morris missed one shift.

5:42 (1). Two decent scoring chances for Michael Ryder in the slot.

4:04 (1). Another nothing for the Pittsburgh power play, which is now 0 for 22. Good work by the Boston shot blockers.

0:00 (1). Derek Morris is in. Johnny Boychuk and Brad Marchand are the healthy scratches.
