Rest day for Bruins

Posted by Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff November 8, 2009 12:24 PM

The Bruins, coming off a 4-2 win over Buffalo last night at TD Garden, are off today. They will get back to work tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. at Ristuccia Arena.

While the Bruins rest, Plus/Minus keeps on working:

Plus

+ The continued sharpness in goal, with Tuukka Rask carrying on what Tim Thomas had accomplished in his last three starts. Both goalies are stopping first shots and controlling their rebounds. The Sabres didn't have many second looks last night.

+ The boost that Daniel Paille has brought to the penalty kill. Paille and Steve Begin look like a good pairing. Paille even had a shorthanded breakaway last night after he finished serving a goaltender interference penalty.

+ The hammering hands of Shawn Thornton. Was a standup guy by accepting Steve Montador's invitation in the first. Then stood up for Byron Bitz by taking on Paul Gaustad in the third.

Minus

- The H1N1 virus that wiped out David Krejci for the last two games. Good job by Krejci to voice his symptoms early and prevent further contagion -- at least for now.

- Careless D-zone passing by Dennis Wideman. Buffalo had two scoring chances because of Wideman giveaways. Even more frustrating when you see Wideman hit Vladimir Sobotka with a clever first pass in the first period that sparked the breakout and led to a Blake Wheeler scoring chance.

- Loss of discipline by Brad Marchand in the third period (two minor penalties, then a 10-minute misconduct). Could have been whistled for a third when he elbowed Mike Grier while coming off the ice. Sabres could have gotten back in the game by scoring a power-play goal. Marchand's game centers on emotion and on-the-edge play, but he has to find the right balance.
