Most of today's practice centered around down-low situations, with the emphasis being improving the forwards' play in the battle areas.

"You want to win battles, so you've got to get better at that," coach Claude Julien said. "If you want to score goals -- which we're not scoring enough of, obviously, to win hockey games -- you've got to find ways to create those. You've got to be willing to get your nose dirty around the net. You've got to be willing to make plays in tight around the net."

  • Marco Sturm skated on his own this morning. Julien said there's a chance Sturm could practice Thursday.
  • Patrice Bergeron took faceoffs today. Bergeron said his thumb is feeling better and that he could be available for draws Friday.
  • Steve Begin practiced with the team, although he didn't participate in all the battle drills. Begin is expected to see more action tomorrow.
