RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Bruins exploded for three goals in last night's third period to claim a 5-2 win over Carolina at the RBC Center. Mark Recchi, Michael Ryder, and David Krejci scored in the third.

They got a major scare in the third when Patrice Bergeron limped off the ice, dropped by a Mark Stuart slap shot to the right knee. X-rays were negative and Bergeron should be OK.

The Bruins, up by a goal after 20 minutes, doubled their lead at 8:27 of the second. Matt Hunwick started the play by fending off a two-on-one rush by Chad LaRose and Joni Pitkanen. With a quick stick, Hunwick busted up LaRose's chance. The Bruins gained control of the puck in the defensive zone, then Hunwick spotted Johnny Boychuk joining the rush. Hunwick connected with a tape-to-tape pass, Boychuk split the Carolina defense, and the defenseman slipped a puck five-hole on Manny Legace at 8:27 to make it a 2-0 game.

The Hurricanes got on the scoreboard with four seconds remaining on a Blake Wheeler holding call. Tuukka Rask stopped Jamie McBain's point slap shot. But the rebound thudded off Rask's pad to Erik Cole, who tapped the puck into the net at 13:53.

Jussi Jokinen had a last-second bid to tie the game. But an instant before the second period expired, Rask held his ground and stuffed Jokinen's close-range attempt.

The Bruins needed only 23 seconds to score the game's first goal. After some strong work winning puck battles behind the net by Bergeron and Recchi, the 42-year-old sent a pass out to Dennis Seidenberg at the right point. At the same time, Bergeron cut to the front of the net, anticipating a shot on goal by Seidenberg. The defenseman obliged, flipping a wrist shot toward the goal that Bergeron tipped past Legace at 0:23 to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead.

The Bruins had a five-on-three power play for 1:41 in the first after Jokinen (interference) and Pitkanen (delay of game) were sent to the penalty box. But the Bruins couldn't solve the Carolina penalty kill.
