WASHINGTON -- Last night at the Verizon Center, in a crucial match in their playoff push, the Bruins could only gain one point.

At 0:44 of overtime, after a high-sticking call on Dennis Wideman, Brooks Laich netted a four-on-three power-play goal to hand the Bruins a 3-2 loss. The Bruins have 85 points, three more than the ninth-place Rangers.

The Bruins snapped a 1-1 tie in the second period. Milan Lucic sent a cross-ice pass to an in-stride Patrice Bergeron. The center shook off a Shaone Morrisonn hook, threw a deke on Jose Theodore, and slipped the puck into the net on his forehand at 7:55, giving the Bruins a 2-1 lead.

But the Capitals scored a late goal in the second to tie the game. Alex Ovechkin careened down the left wing and threw a pass out front for Mike Knuble. The former Bruin, playing his usual blue-collar style, jammed the puck through Tuukka Rask at 19:31 of the second to tie the game at 2-2. The play went to review but the goal was upheld.

The Capitals took a 1-0 lead in the first period after a lengthy video review. Ovechkin started the goal-scoring sequence from the left wing, sending a cross-ice pass to Nicklas Backstrom. Ovechkin got rid of the pass an instant before Zdeno Chara, who had vacated his net-front position, jumped up to throw a big hit on the Russian. With no defenseman in sight, Backstrom wound up and snapped a wrist shot under Rask's left arm. Rask got a piece of the shot, but the puck trickled through and rolled over the line at 7:36.

Referee Bill McCreary called it a goal, but the play went under review to determine whether Wideman cleared the puck before it crossed the line. There was not evidence to overturn the on-ice call.

The Bruins tied the score with 1.6 seconds remaining in the first. First, Bergeron won an offensive-zone draw against David Steckel. Bergeron pulled the puck to Chara, who turned and sent a D-to-D pass to Wideman at the left point. Wideman cranked a one-timer that sailed through traffic and beat Theodore to even the score at 1-1.
