Buyout period closes today
The NHL's first buyout period closes today at 5 p.m. For the second time in the last four years, the Bruins will not have exercised any buyouts. A second buyout period opens next month for any teams that have arbitration cases. But the Bruins are not planning on buying out any players during the second period either.
While the buyout tool allows clubs to shed expensive players at two-thirds cost, it is a steep price for teams to pay because of the cap effect.
Last summer, the Bruins bought out Peter Schaefer and Patrick Eaves. The Bruins receive a credit of $41,667 on Eaves's buyout in 2010-11. But they have one more year of carrying Schaefer's $766,667 buyout number.
In 2008, the Bruins bought out the final year of Glen Murray's deal. For the last two seasons, the Bruins carried Murray's $1,383,333 buyout number on their books.
There were no buyouts in 2007. In 2006, the Bruins exercised buyouts on Shawn McEachern and Travis Green.
