Free agent defenseman Ryan Donald has agreed to a one-year deal with Providence. Donald, who participated in last month's development camp as an invitee, played four years at Yale. Last season, Donald scored two goals and six assists in 34 games as Yale captain. Upon the conclusion of his college career, Donald signed an amateur tryout contract with Springfield, where he appeared in three AHL games.

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound Donald is a stay-at-home defenseman. According to Scott Norton, Donald's agent, the Bruins followed the 23-year-old during his Yale career and Springfield tryout.

"We felt the Bruins are a good fit because of the makeup of their defensive prospects," Norton wrote in an e-mail, "and our understanding that they have a need for a big, strong, physical presence like Ryan."

The contract will be finalized when Donald returns this weekend from his honeymoon.
